Natural Birth

Pelvic Girdle Pain/SPD

Does anyone have experience or tips on dealing with SPD/PGP before & during natural childbirth?  This is my 2nd child, and I had DS1 naturally, but was not experiencing this excruciating pain with months to go.  With DS1 I pushed at a squatting bar & gave birth in a reclined sitting position.  From what I've read, both of those aggravate PGP.  I'm 6 weeks away now, and it's becoming unbearable.  Chiropractic care? Physical therapy? Laboring on all fours? TIA!

Re: Pelvic Girdle Pain/SPD

  • I had SPD pain early in the 3rd tri last time and was planning on a natural birth (had GD! had to go to OB, had c-section) and I think I remember reading that a water birth was ideal.

  • I had major SPD (I was on crutches for weeks and eventually just couldn't leave the house), however, after 40 weeks, it got better.  I don't know if it was because her head was engaging and it helped stabilize things, or what.

I had a water birth, but I labored a lot out of the tub, and honestly, the SPD didn't bother me one bit.  I think my brain was just so overloaded dealing with contractions and pushing that it "forgot" to send signals to my pelvis, if that makes any sense.

The pain was about 85% gone immediately after I gave birth, and totally gone a couple of weeks later.

ETA: Unfortunately, I didn't really do much for the pain beforehand except a couple of exercises which I'm sure you've heard of if you've been googling.  I did acupuncture too, which helped like, the day I had it, but not much after that.  However the acupuncture itself was really nice and relaxing.  Mostly I just dealt with it.  You get to a point where there's really not much you can do.  I've heard good things about chiropractors, but I never tried it.

  • Thank you for this, it gives me hope!

  • I had it with both pregnancies and don't recall any associated pain during labor. It went away immediately after my first, but it seems to rear its ugly head when I jog now this time around and I'm 10 weeks postpartum
  • I had horrible SPD during third tri with DS that WENT AWAY with frequent and consistent chiropractor visits ... I had been wishing for a wheelchair beforehand. No problems with delivery from SPD then and the chiro visits stopped at delivery and the pain never returned.

  • Tuesday at 12:23 I welcomed my daughter into this world all-natural with a diagnosis of SPD (diagnosed at ~22w). I had intended to push squatting or all fours but was so exhausted from transition that I was in I guess what you call a semi-reclined position. Squatting and all fours was what I was told by my PT.

  • I have it too and do some small excercises that seem to help.  My midwife sugested going to a chiro for the webster, but I haven't done it yet.  It's supposed to help a lot.  For labor I've heard all 4's or a water birth are the best.  I'm planning a water birth.  Hope everything is livable for you!

  • Thank you all for your posts! I've tried some of the exercises & they seem to help some.  I've never been to a chiropractor, but I'm definitely considering it.   I am encouraged to hear the pain mostly goes away after the birth- except maybe during exercise- and doesn't add too much pain during L&D.  Thanks again for all of your input & congrats to the new mama!

  • I had an extreme degree of it with DS1 that never fully resolved (very uncommon) and started my PG with DS2 with that degree. Regular chiro care with someone who specialized in PG care made a HUGE difference. As in, life-changing for me as a person in chronic pain because of my extreme degree when doctors told me there was no hope. The PG was better, the delivery was better, the recovery was better. As for labor itself: water was wonderful.
