What's the deal with swaddling?

Just curious...I've noticed posts regarding stopping swaddling?  Why? I swaddled FOREVER with DS and hated having to give it up but it was much later than 4 months and it was him doing not us...(this one hates it and we did modified swaddling at first with both arms out but then stopped completely when she moved to the bouncy seat to sleep).

    my kids are swaddled forever.  DD was around5 months, DS1 around 8 months, and DS2 is going strong

    My mom swears my cousin's kid was swaddled until age 2. I am not sure how / why but then again I've never had a 2 year old. We have no plans on giving it up until she busts out and then we may move to the Merlin suit (see other post)

    Okay...thanks...I was just confused that I had missed something since we don't get to do it though DS still likes me to wrap him tight with his million covers!

    That makes sense too...DS never tried to break free until he was much older and was able to move about...I imagine we'd be weaning also if DD was still swaddled since she likes to sleep with blankets over her face.
