Cradle cap treatment?

Forgive me if this has already been discussed. I couldn't find any threads pertaining to this recently.

My LO has an awful case of cradle cap. It is so dry and scaly. I'm worried it irritates the poor little guy. I have tried aveeno lotion, baby oil, and a little remedies lotion specifically for cradle cap. None of this has helped...in fact, it almost seems worse.

Has anyone else dealt with cradle cap? Has anything worked for your LO? At his 2 month check up, the pedi suggested baby oil and loosening the scales with a soft brush. Obviously, that hasn't worked for us.

I appreciate any suggestions!

Re: Cradle cap treatment?

  • there is a post on 3-6 months...check there...I think they had some good ideas.

We just use mustela cradle cap shampoo but I don't feel its too bad at this point.

  • My hubby uses suave clarifying shampoo, so what I have done with all three kiddos is:

Take a pea size or less amount and massageinto scalp after I had picked at it alittle with my fingernail (bad habit while he is eating) thenuse a microfiber wash cloth to rub it around and then rinse cloth and use to wash the shampoo out.

The microfiber does a great job at exfoliating scalpin a gentlle way.

    Works great

    Coconut oil. Massage/brush into scalp.

THIS!  DS had a small patch of crusty stuff on his scalp.  I massage coconut oil onto it right before bath.  then use his baby shampoo and hair brush to scrub it off.  It worked like a charm!

  • Thanks for the suggestions! Where do I find coconut oil? Can you get it at a regular grocery store?
  • None of these worked for us so our doctor had us shampoo with neutrogena tgel shampoo for 10 days. We put a tiny bit on a toothbrush and scrub it on his head. It isn't totally gone but is so much better.

My doctor recommended massaging a small amount of olive oil into K's scalp. nbsp;I haven't tried it yet but I need to, soon.

  • when LO has it we use a soft brush in circles to get all the dead stuff off,  wash every other day with baby shampoo and then finish up with some baby oil massaged into his scalp. it usually clears up in about 3 or 4 days.

  • We used coconut oil and brushed out the flakes. After bath time we use cerave lotion (ped told us about it)...it's amazing.  It was pretty much gone in a day. You can get it at any store.

Yes, you should be able to find coconut oil in grocery stores. It's solid at room temperature and comes in a tub.  I bought mine at whole foods but Trader Joe's has it as well.
