My DD has RSV - and she had the shots :(

I was in the ER this morning with my DD because she had a fever of 101.2 and was coughing and not eating.  They tested her for RSV and said it was negative -- she's 3 months old (1 month adjusted - born at 31 weeks).  So, they sent me home and told me to give her Tylenol and neb treatments every 4 hrs.  Then tonight at 5pm, her Pediatricians office called, and said a sample of the swab from her nose the ER took this morning was sent to Children's hospital in Boston and she actually DOES have RSV.  Isn't that crazy! I asked them what should I do, and they said "nothing, just watch her breathing and call us if she gets worse..".  Well, she's not eating, coughing, and she's thrown up a few times -- why do they not think this is serious...!!! :(

Also, she had the RSV shot every month for the past 3 months, clearly they don't work!

  • So sorry for your sweet girl! Sadly the shots don't prevent RSV, they only lessen the symptoms and help the babies handle and sustain the infection. Hopefully she will recover quickly!

  • Hope she gets better soon! As pp said it lessens the severity of symptoms and it does help minimize risk, but if your area is have the outbreak mine is I will say my pedi said we are super lucky so far she hasn't got it even being on lock down and its so bad around here right now he said we may end up carrying it home to her from work or the grocery.

  • That's good to know.  I was aware it wasn't technically a vaccine, but I didn't know it wouldn't prevent catching it.  I took DD to her pediatrician today, and now it makes sense that she's not really worried about her -- because she's had the monthly shots -- so hopefully she won't need to be hospitalized while she works through it.  Although she has alert/happy moments, her lungs are "crackling" and she's not eating well -- and she just threw up everything she ate :( I asked the Dr today "how many more days do we have before she's all better" and the answer was "weeks".  I guess RSV lingers for weeks, ugh.  I'm just happy I'm still out on Maternity Leave so I can personally take care of her.  Thanks all for the well wishes!

  • My son was born at 32 weeks. He is 7.5 months now and just got RSV a week and a half ago. Thank you daycare. His worst really only lasted about 3 or 4 days. He did throw up a few times because of all the mucus he was swallowing. The pedi said we could give him pedialyte to make sure he stayed hydrated. We waited it out at home and did the neb treatments for a week. He's finally doing better and barely coughing. I'm thankful he got the antibodies because it could have been a lot worse than it was.

That's the part that really sucks with RSV symptoms can linger for a while. nbsp;[:] nbsp;Out of curiosity, are you running a humidifier in her room, and do you have her sleeping on an incline, like in a RnP? nbsp; That can help with some of the drainage. nbsp;Running hot water in your shower so it gets steamy can help, too. nbsp;I have a friend on another board that also suggested taking LO outside in the cold air or even holding them in front of the freezer if you can't get outside. nbsp; It's something with the cold air that can help open up the airways. nbsp;I never tried it myself, but it might be worth a shot if you feel like you want to take a walk or something.

Our pedi recommended the cold air when DD had croup. It helped a lot. And she was entertained trying to grab stuff out of the freezer lol.

  •  Both DD and DS were diagnosed with RSV on the 20th. The doctor sent us home and told us to come back two days later unless they worsened and to continue to offer them the bottle often. DS was also diagnosed with bronciolitis but was not given a nebulizer treatment. Two days later they both had ear infections but were on the mend. DD went back to daycare on that Friday and DS today (they don't go on Mondays). They are just going back to normal eating habits. The coughing is the worse and would wake my two up at night. We also did have frequent vomiting following coughing fits.
