Did you watch television as a child? Did you turn out fine, or is your PhD a symptom of your mental instability? How much pot/alcohol did you have to consume to survive your dissertation?

I am not a phd since I used too much nail polish as a kid but I am ber proud of my baby brother who is. Molecular neuroscience. He watched plenty of tv, played sports. Dated and drank during grad school and dissertation but I don't believe any pot. He did sleep at the lab a few times.

If it helps, it wasn't from University of Phoenix but I'm convinced some of the faculty did their dental training through their online program.

I forgot to say that I watched TV all the time as a kid. It wasn't even edumacational. Mostly inspector Gadget and Teddy Ruxpin. My mom also drank, did drugs, smoked and tanned while she was pregnant with me until she figured out she was KTFU at 5 months along.

Totes probably why I'm not a "real doctor".

When someone is having a heart attack and they ask, "Is there a Doctor in the house?" we can both stand up, and then they can say a "No, we mean a REAL Doctor," we can both sit down and say:

OMG! The rest is fine, but she TANNED???!?!1!

Inspector Gadget was totally educational. It was about robotics, and Penny showed that if you're smart it doesn't matter if you're young.

Ok, I lied. I don't have a PhD. Actually, I said doctorate in the first place, KC just assumed it was PhD, and I didn't feel the need to correct every mistake she made. I have a JD, which explains my knee jerk, argue every point attitude. So I guess I am not allowed to post in this thread.

You do realize a PhD basically is retaining useless knowledge in one tiny, tiny subject area, right?

I'm convinced I know less about most subjects now than I did when I graduated college. And a lot, lot more about one tiny area.

I'm convinced I know less about most subjects now than I did when I graduated college. And a lot, lot more about one tiny area.

Maybe I should have said smarter instead of awesome. I think DH is smarter than I am. He always disagrees though.

Finally, someone made a thread for me.

I have a PhD. It's in School Psychology. Basically I am a child development  expert, please direct all future parenting questions my way. (Just kidding. School Psychology is actually the red headed stepchild of the Psychology disciplines; I'm not an expert in anything).

I watched way too much TV as a child. I would not say that I turned out fine.

I consumed many mind-altering substances before, during, and after my dissertation.  I still have nightmares about it.

I actually think this is a common misconception. In my program (and many others), PhD students are offered jobs at the University (usually as a research or teaching assistant) and get free tuition, a small monthly stipend, and benefits. So, I was able to graduate completely debt-free.
