High-Risk Pregnancy

8 weeks pregnant, subchorionic hematoma

Hello, I am brand new to the site. I am currently 8 weeks pregnant and being monitored by a reproductive endocrinologist due to high risk issues with my last pregnancy. The baby is doing great, growth is good and we have seen two strong heart beats. Yesterday on the scan they saw a subchorionic hematoma and the doctor is concerned about it growing and affecting the baby. I have been put on bed rest and returning for a follow up scan on Monday. Has anyone ever experienced this? I am very scared, and not sure how to maintain bed rest with a two year old at home (he is staying with my Mom for the weekend.) Thanks for any advice!!

Re: 8 weeks pregnant, subchorionic hematoma

  • I had a subchorionic hematoma found at 8 weeks. It was 1.5 inch by 2 inches and at our 12 week scan was down to 8mm. So far, so good! We weren't even put on bed rest or any restrictions. Maybe it depends on how big it is. Best wishes for a shrinking hematoma and an easy pregnancy!

  • I had an SCH at 8 wks and another around 11 weeks, both times with heavy bleeding.  I've been on pelvic rest since the first and bedrest since the second.  It looked on my last scan that it seems to be getting slightly smaller and resolving.  I know it's hard to be on bedrest with another LO at home (mine is 2.5 yr/o) but just remember to stay off your feet, don't lift anything heavy, and drink plenty of water.  There's also a great SCH support board on babycenter.com that can help answer a lot of your questions.

  • I had a subchorionic hematoma around week 6...I bled heavily for about 4 more weeks after, and then spotted for another 2-3 weeks.  It was terrifying, but the doc monitored everything closely and every time I heard that little heartbeat going strong it was SUCH a relief.  We're at 20 weeks 5 days now and it has completely resolved itself.  I know it's really scary, and if you're like me I was 100% sure I had lost the baby every single time the bleeding got bad...but babies are tough cookies.  Our little guy is developing right on track and we haven't had any other issues with the hematoma.  I hope yours is quick to resolve!  Good luck mama! :)

  • I found out I had a subchorionic hematoma at about 7 weeks, when I started bleeding heavily. My husband and I frantically made a trip to the ER praying for the best (previously miscarried in June).  We found a large hematoma about 5cm by 3cm, but thankfully both of my babies were fine.  I was put on bed rest for a week.  I went in for another ultrasound a week later and the hematoma had decreased in size to 2 by 2, but they found another one:(  I am currently just about 11 weeks and waiting to go back to the doctor to check my status.  I am constantly scared and over think every cramp or lack of symptom.  My doctor did place me on progesterone injections to stop me from cramping.  Even though they are painful they have worked so well.  As if being pregnant isn't stressful enough we all have to deal with a hematoma.  I am praying for you all!
  • My Husband and I have had 2 previous miscarriages this year and are pregnant again. We're very excited but became alarmed when we went for our first sono and were told we too had SCH and there were 2 small clots that showed up. Due to my prior history they put me on bed rest immediately (we were about 6 weeks). The night before our follow up sono this week I began cramping and bleeding and passed a large clot. My husband and I were prepared for the worst. We called the emergency Dr. that night and he told us we wont know anything till our sono. After lots of prayers, we went to the sono and the baby was fine! One of the clots was gone (they believe I passed it) and we're still keeping an eye on the other one. I'm still home on bed rest. Approaching week 8. We're scheduled for another sono next week, with SCH we're going to be on edge until we see the baby and hear that heartbeat again.
