Reflux

So anyone's else LO suffering?

About a week ago I noticed after every feeding she would have this coughing fit. Her tongue would stick out and she seemed like she was hacking up a lung. It sounded bad, but really didn't seem to bother her too much. She's also a pretty heavy spitter too.

We had her 1 month appt. and I brought it up to the ped. I was worried about croup or whooping cough, so I was quite surprised that she mentioned reflux. She asked me to really monitor the coughing and listen to her stomach after feeds. Sure enough I heard quite a lot of gurgling and the coughs came like clockwork only after feeds. I was hesitate at first, but we started meds two days ago, twice a day and I'm hoping it helps. I was told it will take 2- 4 days to make a difference, and my sister (who is a ped) said it could take up to a week.

Anyone else?

Re: Reflux

  • I am wondering if my LO has reflux. She spits up at just about every feeding and on a bad day she will even projectile vomit. Once in a while she will gag out of no where. Then yesterday she started to cough. I though maybe she was getting a cold but that is the only symptom. I will have to keep track of her coughing and bring it up to the ped on Monday when she goes for her one month check-up. Thanks for the post.

  • yea, we just went for our LO one month checkup and decided to do Ranitidine/Zantac for reflux. I usually feel pretty conservative about medications especially with her being so young but she just seems miserable lying on her back. Not to mention the coughing, throwing up, spitting up, gurgling, and back arching.  So even though she is gaining weight we have decided to the medicine. It was hard to get her take it at first cause it tasted so nasty so we gave it with some breast milk and that seemed to help. Our pediatrician said it might take a week to work as well. Also, he said you can try it if it helps but if you stop it by her two month no big deal. So we will give a try and see how it goes. Hope it helps!

  • Ugh I just posted about this on the BF board... I'm on the fence about whether LO should be on medications.  I've read a lot online and it seems there may be a tendency to over-prescribe meds just because LO is spitting up and crying (both of which are common baby activities).  She just seems so miserable at times... I'm gonna talk to the pedi about it on Tuesday, so we'll see what happens.
  • My LO was given Zantac, he seems like it's not as painful when he's burping / spitting up or laying flat anymore but occasionally he still screams and gulps and I know it's reflux bothering him.

  • DS has a bad case of reflux. He spits up after every feeding. Some feedings, he spits up almost the entire contents. It has affected his growth also. He is a slow grower most likely due to reflux. We decided to put him on Prevacid. I wasn't crazy about the idea of medicine, but I also didn't want him to be uncomfortable. Also, the Prevacid does not prevent spitting, it just neutralizes the stomach acid so it doesn't hurt as badly when he spits up.

  • well today I noticed a marked decrease in coughing & churning in her belly. Hopefully it's the sign that it's working.
