Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What do you sing to your baby?

This is embarrassing but I realize I do not know many baby songs!  The other night I was trying to sooth LO and the only songs I knew were Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, ABCs (I was desperate), Mary Had a Little Lamb, and made up lyrics to Hush a Bye Baby.  So..what songs do you sing to your little ones?  Smile

Re: What do you sing to your baby?

  • I also make up words to lullabies, or I just hum the melody over and over. I also sing the soft kitty song from the tv show Big Bang Theory. LOL

  • I think a better question is what "don't" I sing!

I make up songs that describe what we're doing and I probably sound like a real goon. But, he seems to like it! Once he's older he'll probably think life is one giant Broadway musical.

Check out some children's singalong apps or children's Pandora stations!

  • This is so me! The first time I tried singing to LO I drew a blank on nursery rhymes and ended up singing Jingle Bells! LOL I honestly sing whatever song comes to mind. :)

  • Sometimes I sing real songs (I have the biggest list in my head... I started writing them down and I stopped at about 150)

But even though I know all of those songs, I mostly just make up songs. Or just sing instead of talking. Some of the songs that I make up end up being sung again, and sometimes it's a one time song.

Your baby just loves that you sing.

  • We sing lots of songs, but his favorites are Itsy Bitsy Spider (he follows my hands with his eyes the whole time and we smile and clap at the end) and 10 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. He has several stuffed monkey toys that rattle, so we use them as props. He loves it.

  • Umm... Piano Man. I totally don't know the lyrics to almost any lullabies and I can only hum/sing the first 3 verse of Hush Little Baby before I go crazy so I hummed Piano Man one night. She doesn't know the difference, we listen to my music too instead of kids stuff, she loves The Antlers.
  • Little Drummer Boy is my go-to song! For some reason it was the only song that came to mind when I was with my friends baby years ago and it stuck. DH think sim crazy!

Mostly I make up songs with her name in it. Lately I have been singing the melody to Gangham Style a lot but I changed to words to "little Lily style" and "hey little Lily." I have a lullaby book but it is such a pain to pull it out and sing from there.

Haha I do this too!  We call her Baby, and I always sing "hey pretty Baby" to her.

We watch sing-a-long videos (mostly veggie tales) and I sing and dance with her to those.

  • One of my favorites is "you are my sunshine, my only sunshine"

  • Typical nursery rhymes, hushabye mountain, baby mine, random Beatles songs... I have music playing almost non stop and I normally end up singing along, so everything and anything, really.

  • Anything that pops in my head. Radio stuff to broadway to regular lullabies...

  • I actually don't know ANY full lullabies, except for probably Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I never played lullabies for DS when he was in the womb, it was always whatever music I liked, so that's what he prefers now. I stick to songs that are slower and simpler when it's bedtime (I've used songs from Coldplay, Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, etc). DH sings Disney songs to DS - his favorite so far seems to be Hakuna Matata. ;) DS much prefers DH's voice to mine, though!

  • I make up words to current pop songs for her. I'm terrible with nursery rhymes.

  • Wheels on the bus! I do hand motions with her and she loves it. Also the "there were 10 in the bed and the little one said roll over" song, lol. ABCs. Hush little baby. I found a website with lyrics to a bunch of baby songs

  • I used to be a brownie leader, so I know a lot of kiddie songs :) My favourites are "Alouette" and "Rainbow Connection". I also go to a weekly baby songs group, and I've learned a few more silly songs with actions for young kids. There's a lot on YouTube, if you want to learn some yourself.

But today she also got a rendition of Queen's "Bicycle Race" when her bicycle diaper cover came up, and all the verses "American Pie" when it came into my head when she was fussy. Oh, and what I remembered of a couple songs from Carmen with silly voices.

What can I say? I get bored narrating my day but I still want to expose R to language, so she gets a lot of mama singing.

  • FTM-to-be here lurking, but I'm a preschool teacher and I do a lot of singing with little kids. I love the Wee Sing series (https://weesing.com/Books-Music). I had the tapes and books as a child and still use them for ideas to teach my students. This website has literally thousands of song ideas all categorized out - fingerplays, lullabyes, songs about particular holidays or topics, folk songs.

In addition to particular child-centered songs, with babies I sing pop music, stuff from musicals, church music, just about anything I like to sing and know the words to. I don't think you can go wrong!

  • Broadway show tunes.  I was prepping for a Broadway themed concert thru my 2nd and 3rd tri.  She would move ad wiggle in between songs, but the minute we started singing, she stopped.  Happened every night.  So now I sing songs from that show.
  • Oldies, musicals, jazz standards. Anything I happen to know some words to!
