Natural Birth

question on birthing center

I had DD in a hospital, so she saw the pedi before we left and then 2 days after she had an appointment. I am planning on having our next baby at a birth center. If we go this route, when would baby see the pedi? Do i make an appointment a few days after the birth to get him/her checked out?

Re: question on birthing center

  • We are required to see a pedi within 72 hours. I called the pediatric office we want to use and they really wanted to see her within 24 ("the next day"). I asked if it was going to be an issue schedule-wise to fit in and she said they leave spaces in their schedule for these type of appointments -- I would assume most pediatric offices do.

    Thanks for the info!

  • I had a home birth and he was assessed by the midwives. We didn't take him to doctor for 2 weeks.

this, although my pedi didn't say anything about having to see her within 24 hours...

  • All three of my kids were birth center births . My midwife monitors her moms and babies till six weeks pp . She comes every other day for the first week or so then two to three times till around three to four weeks depending on the moms level of comfort I never felt the need to bring my kids into there pedi during that time so they always say there pedi at two months of age . The pediatrician around here don't seem to mind that.
  • We had a 2 day and then a 2 week pedi appointment. A nurse from the birthing center came to check on us the day after and a few days later as well. We also have an appointment at the midwife about a week later because she did my son's circumcision.
