Can BFing cause a false positive PG test?

I have an almost 7 month old that I am currently nursing. I got my first period over a month ago. My husband and I have only had sex with condoms. Except he does stick his penis in without a condom and we have sex for a few minutes without it. But he has never finished inside me without a condom. My period is a few days late so I decided to take a test. The second line to make the cross was so faint I had to hold it under the light to see it. But I know from my last pregnancy that even the slightest bit of hcg is picked up. Can brestfeeding somehow tamper, or rather enhance the results?

Re: Can BFing cause a false positive PG test?

  • I know bf'ing can make your periods quirky and decreases fem. hormones...

I don't think it effects pregnancy tests. Dh and I thought we had a surprise happen after we didn't use a condom around the first couple times. I had it come back neg and know I'm not pg.

    Good luck either way

  • Test again with first morning urine. If its negative then use condoms from beginning to end from now on. Condoms aren't 100% effective if used correctly, which it doesn't sound like you are.

  • Eek!  I don't think a false positive is possible.  False negative, yes....but I remember learning in school false positive doesn't happen.  Hopefully I'm wrong if that's what you are hoping for! :)

  • I would retest in the AM. Breast feeding can not cause a false positive and semen is always leaked from the penis during sex, it doesn't just come out when he finishes so you could be pregnant.

  • Nope. You're preggo. Wait a few days and take another test. You will only get a positive on your test if you are pregnant. No way around it. Get a digital test maybe? Mine are 17 months apart. Don't worry. It's crazy but a good thing. GL! And congrats!
  • I'd say it's safe to say you're preggo! the second line on all of the tests i took were faint....gl!

I agree. This is a weird post. There are better ways of explaining the situation of sex and the whole idea of bf causing a positive preg test is ridiculous. IMO.
If not, then yeah you're pregnant... But this post is odd...

  • First of all, I don't even know what "MUD" means. Second of all, I don't know why this post is odd? It's not like I lurk on this site. Haven't been on here in several months. I had an honest question and I was seeking some honest understanding. Sheesh.
  • No, breastfeeding does not produce HCG.

If you truly had a positive pregnancy test, it is because you are pregnant, barring some other very rare medical condition that is probably not the case.

Blue dye tests are notoriously unreliable. If you used one, go out and buy a First Response Early Response pregnancy test or any other pink dye test, and try again. If you get a second line, you're pregnant.

  • No, BFing can not give you a false positive. You are pregnant because you don't have protected sex.

No.You are pregnant. The pull out method is wellknown to be a very ineffective method of birth control. Not much better than unprotected sex.

Yup.. That's how we got our Lucy.
