Placentophagy

I posted this on my birth month board, and then the AP and eco board,  and they thought you guys might be able to provide me with more insight. My yoga instructor has been going on and on about Placentophagy. Has anyone done this? I'm very organic but not quite so granola that this ever occured to me with DD. On the one hand, I think it's interesting and the benefits sound great, especially considering I had such a hard time nursing last time. On the other hand, it's kinda gross.

What do you guys think? Any personal experience would be appreciated!

  • It is becoming more common and many women have done it.  I did the traditional chinese medicine form and I took them daily. The raw form is a bit to gross for me.   I think it helped with PPD and I never had any issues with my  milk supply.

  • This has actually always been a common practice, just not in our Modern Western world. I plan on dehydrating mine and taking them in pill form. The benefits are endless.

    the benefits are really quite amazing. i'm a proponent of getting it in the mama however possible, but you do lose some potency when it is dehydrated. however, it lasts longer when dehydrated. i ate mine raw in smoothies. you really can't taste it at all.

     

    humans are one of a very small handful of mammals (most of the rest being sea mammals: dolphins, whales, seals) who do not regularly eat their placenta after birth.
