Ethiopian food?

So apparently DH does listen occasionally when I ramble on about all the restaurants I want to try that I know probably aren't at the top of his list.

I got him concert tickets for this weekend and he just went and researched an Ehtiopian place because when we lived in the city Ethiopian was one of the cuisines I never got to try.  I'm excited!

They have a few family-style options where you can choose meat dishes, vegetarian, or a combination of the two so we can order that way to sample more than one entree.  Or we can each just get our own.  Bear in mind we have really different taste so I'm more likely to enjoy the vegetarian options whereas, when I'm looking at them, I don't think he will.

What should I order???

Re: Ethiopian food?

  • I LOVE any of the lentil options. Also the roasted beets are amazing. H and I will usually double up on the lentils and beets and once in a while get one of the meat options.

The place we go to isn't really entree/app specific and everything comes on a communal plate.

  • It's all good.

Except the uncooked, spiced meat, if they have it. Stay away from that.

Also, be careful with the spice level.

  • Use the injera efficiently. I filled up on that the first time.

I underestimated how bloated it would make me feel afterwards. But I regretted nothing!

That's what I always think of too.  I love that dumb movie.

  • Every place I've gone, it has been served family style. Talk to your server, tell him/her your tastes. They always have great recommendations.
  • This is the only Ethopian restaurant I have ever eaten at:

     https://www.makedas.com/

We ate there before having DD, so can't say what kids would think of it.  I liked it but DH was not a fan.

I recall we chose the meat sampler to just get a variety of what they offered - their version had meat and vegetarian dishes as part of the sample - it was not all meat.

  • Jealous! Ethiopian is so good. I'd probably get a sampler so I can try a lot of different things, but I haven't had anything I didn't like.

    Enjoy!

  • I usually scarf the beef tibs, the yellow lentils, the carrots, and the injera.

KJ hit the nail on the head with her comment on injera, though.  Don't eat too much of it otherwise you will not want it again for years.

Note to self:  Do not gorge yourself on injera.

I probably needed to hear that.  Twice.  I'm notorious for waddling out of restaurants with most of my entree in a to-go container because I went to town on an appetizer or bread. I 've gotten better, but you know that WW tip where you don't need bread at the beginning of the meal and you should just send it back because you WILL eat it otherwise?

I have yet to master that one.

Well, the injera comes with your meal, not at the beginning.  It's the "plate" your food comes on since you don't eat Ethiopian food with utensils.

Just don't ask for extra injera.

Spicy lamb if they have it is my favorite! You should be served a variety of family style veg sides so you'll eb able to sample a lot. Where are you going?
Demera?  It's near the Aragon, where the concert is at.

Demera is most delish. I go there with a girlfriend whose daughter is Ethiopian. My DD loves the food there, too. You can't go wrong. Like I said, talk to the server, they'll take care of you.
