a "focal point" during labor

My birth prep class person suggested to bring a "focal point" like a flower or a photo or something to help cope through contractions. To me it sounds a little cheesy, but then again I don't really know what to expect so I'm thinking I should maybe pack something. Has anyone used a focal point and found it helpful? What did you use?

Re: a "focal point" during labor

  • This is my first baby, but I'm planning on bringing my favorite ultrasound image as my focal point. Personally, I want that "finish line" there to remind me that all sensations are temporary and there's a clear endpoint! I also might hang the clothing I bring for the baby in a prominent place, to reinforce the idea.

  • I planned on having a focal point during labor.  I was going to focus on a flower opening up to visualize the whole L&D process.  I also wanted H to tell me happy stories from our relationship.  However, when I was in labor I wanted complete  quietness and I zoned out during contractions.  I think it is a good idea to plan on having a focal point but you wont really know if you will like it or not until you are in labor.

  • I definitely needed a focal point. With my last birth experience, it was either my husband's eyes or out the window my room had a great view. You could try bringing something but who knows what you will decide to use in the moment.
  • I really practiced relaxing and deep breathing, both of which worked during labor. I was too out of it to have something to focus on, but having a coping mechanism to keep myself from panicking worked well. I did find myself staring at one spot, but it wasn't anything specific or planned.

  • I guess my focal point for DS was the wall behind the toilet since I straddled it most of the time.  Not a plan, just happened.  You'll find that happens!

  • I didnt really do much preparing to think about a focal point but after i was induced and my "real"labor started all i could do during my contractions was breathe and stare at the sides of my hospital bed where the little buttons to adjust the bed were lol. I just kept staring at the little button people and then i would ask them again if i was dialated enough to get the epidural lol.

  • Oddly enough, I focused on the texture of the bed rail and the handle in the tub. I didn't really keep my eyes open so texture and quiet were key to my focus and staying centered.
