First, I love lurking here, I've learned so much so thanks for all the great info!
I'd really like to have a complete CD stash by the time LO gets here in April because I just know I'm the kind of person who needs to have it all set up in the beginning to be able to make it work. Here is what I have:
Newborn:
2 dozen orange edge GMD cloth eez prefolds, 3 snappis, 6 covers, 2 grovia aios, 3 Charlie banana pockets
One size:
4 grovia AIOs, 3 fuzzi bunz, 3 itti bitti tutto
i think I'm pretty close with my newborn stash and I am thinking about some sbish fitteds and my sister is knitting some wool soakers for my one size collection. What would you add to round this out? The one area CD area I don't really understand is doublers. What do I need to know/ should I buy any?
Re: Help me round out my stash!
NB - depends on how often you want to wash, but if you want to wash every other day, I'd suggest getting about 6 more diapers. Maybe some Kawaii Pure & Naturals or even some GMD fitteds that you can use with your covers. It also wouldn't hurt to get another cover or two. 6 might be enough, but my LO pooped a lot at first & I easily went through 5 covers in one day.
For the OS - Maybe add some Bum Genius 4.0s or Freetimes. A lot of people like the 4.0s better than FuzziBunz because they are easier to stuff. But the FB do fit smaller so they may fit sooner & may fit better if you have a smaller baby. I also highly suggest waiting to complete your OS stash until LO is here. Then you'll know if you have a tall/short, chunky legged/skinny legged, LO. That will play a role in what diaps work best for you.
Don't forget about having wetbags (2 med for daycare, 1 small for diaper bag, and 2 large or 2 pail liners for home), CD safe diaper cream, CD safe detergent, and cloth wipes on hand. I also love my drying rack (just a cheapy from Walmart) to use for drying covers when the weather is cold/rainy.
As far as doublers - basically they are extra liners that you can add to increase absorbency on a diaper. A lot of OS diapers come with two inserts, so you may not need a lot (or any) doublers for a while. When you'll need them is at night time once baby starts sleeping through the night and perhaps for naps if you have a heavy wetter. A lot of people like hemp or bamboo because both fibers absorb a lot. Its pretty common to use one microfiber (MF) insert over the top of one or two hemp/bamboo inserts. The MF absorbs quickly, but doesn't hold a lot. So far I've been able to just use a prefold under the MF insert that came with my diapers.
Congrats on your baby and good luck getting your stash finished up!
Newborn: a half dozen fitteds (like Kissaluvs size 0) or Kawaii Pure & Natural pockets. We averaged 15 diapers per day with DD for the first month, so you'll be happy to have few more. The P&Ns will fit beyond the newborn stage, too, so they will also buy some time for you to sort out your OS stash. DD wore hers until about 8 months old.
OS: You've actually selected some of the smaller-cut OS brands, so it's likely these will start fitting relatively early on. I agree with PPs about adding some BG 4.0 pockets. They aren't particularly fancy, but they are great diapers. Sbish fitteds are also a good choice. If you add 2 sbish and 4-6 BGs plus end up with 6 P&Ns that will bring your post-newborn collection to 22-24 diapers, which is great. I know you want to get everything sorted now, but I would definitely recommend waiting until your LO arrives before getting too much more. Then you'll have a better idea of what you like, what fits and what works without spending a ton of money. (FWIW, I found out post-baby that I *hated* AIOs and ended up selling all of mine. Others decide they hate stuffing pockets and go all AIOs. Others still decide that after switching to OS pockets they really miss prefolds & covers).
Doublers: They are absorbency boosters. It's unlikely you will need them before your LO fits into OS diapers and then you can use your nb prefolds as doublers.
