Mixing cereal with puree

Just wondering about this. The cereal always says to mix with bm, formula or water so at home i mix with bm but daycare is always "thickening" purees with cereal. I think they just dont want to take the time to give each separately. I want to say something but also want to choose my battles wisely because overall we're happy with daycare. Wwyd?

Re: Mixing cereal with puree

  • I would leave this one alone, and here's why: There's actually another post below about cereal + puree, and apparently lots of people mix the cereal directly into the fruit, without any BM (which I did not know until I read that post).

Also, he's getting the exact same *amount* of food, regardless of whether they mix the cereal with BM first, b/c in order to make cereal separately they'd have to take a few tbs of milk out of the bottles you sent in, right? So it's the same thing, just in a different combination. But yeah, it's probably faster for them, too :)

  • We mix oatmeal with fruit puree's... more to just give flavor to the oatmeal... otherwise WAY too bland...

I don't see an issue with it...

  • I agree with the others.  I've had to add some barley or oatmeal to some of my veggies or fruits because they turned out too liquidy and it worked great to thicken it up.

I've also mixed 2 oz of fruit with 1 tbsp of oatmeal without any formula....just a different way to make your fruit oatmeal.

  • I mix my daughter's purees with oatmeal all the time! It thickens it up so it is less messy and easier for her to eat! Plus, I figure the oatmeal will help her feel full longer! I don't see a problem with it at all!

  • Unless the thickening is causing constipation I don't see a problem with it.  I send fruit, or they mix applesauce into cereal for DD at her daycare.

  • I never heard of this until I worked in a daycare. My boss directed us to do it that way. I mix it for LO now too. It thickens up the baby food. he seems to enjoy it :) If you dont want them to do it, tell them, but I really dont think its a big deal. GL!
  • I mix oatmeal directly into fruit purees and veggie purees, there doesn't seem to be any issues. We've been doing this for the last few months.

  • Oatmeal shouldn't cause constipation, rice cereal does, at least from our pediatricians view.  Also he stated thicker food as they get older, so start very thin, and work your way up.

If you decide you don't want to thicken it yet, you should introduce the conversation by saying you like to keep things similar at home and at daycare, and you noticed perhaps you might be doing it differently.  Then you could premise the change you want by saying "well, we like to keep them separate" and then just kind of let that hang there for a second, they should get the picture pretty quick.

We also mix food and cereal, and will soon be mixing amaranth into veggies, so you can guide what they do.  We just tell daycare how we have changed things and then say "If you have questions, call, she's doing great on this so you shouldn't have any issues" and they have always followed suit.

  • I mix rice cereal with all dad's meals. Honestly DC has more experience with babies then I do. Not that i would give them full reign, but this doesn't seem like something you need to dictate.
