It blows my mind when I go to Mass and see kids playing with electronics. What the heck? I went to Mass every single week growing up and sure, I got a little anxious, constantly asking my dad to pick me up, put me back down, etc. but I got through it. An hour is a long time for a kid to sit still at any age, but I had no choice. My parents didn't hand me bags of cereal or fruit snacks or books to read. I had no choice but to learn focus.
I have only seen that once and I told the teens to put it away because it was inappropriate. (We were all jammed together in a pew because it was a super special Mass celebrating the centennial of the parish, the archbishop was there, all the living, former priests, etc.) I don't know where their parents were sitting, but I wasn't going to tolerate them giggling at their phones.
So that's my other UO, if your teens are talking during Mass and you aren't correcting them, I will turn around and shush them. I'll also tell them to put their phones away. Maybe this is actually a FFFC, I'm already the grumpy old lady at church.
I hate when religion and politics are brought onto TB. It's been kind of an unspoken/written rule since I started posting on these boards about 3yrs ago. Too many people get upset, too many things get said, and too much CRAP clutters the board that the majority of people don't care to read about.
I don't come to TB to read about this BS.
ETA: And it is hard to avoid it when it is in the middle of an UO or a FFFC which can usually be a lot of fun. If a post is titled and the OP is all about politics/religion, I'd just give the OP and responders the side-eye and then ignore the post.
I honestly didn't mean for it to get into an all out debate, hence why I didn't continue to discuss politics. I'm just so fed up with being labeled as one thing or another.
I haven't been yet, but I want to go! I usually have ds with me, so it would be kind of hard during the weekdays, but they also do tea there. My mil is always sending me emails from them. I do love this area. Dh and I went to Virginia tech and we miss the mountains sometimes. It's nice that if we drive 10 mins away, we feel at home. I grew up in Burke, so I'm pretty familiar with centreville. We looked there, but couldn't find anything in our price range that we liked.
My DH grew up in Burke! But he went to a private Christian school for HS. I've never been to Tech but most of my co-workers went there (silly engineers!).

Imho this isn't a U/O (as in I agree with you for the most part). I don't particularly love politics on here but if the issue is raised I'll respond. I would prefer to not have politics/religion on here for the very reasons you cited but if its brought up I'll play.
But on the other hand I pretty much thing everything on an internet message board is either crap or one step above anyways.
Well yes, most stuff posted here is crap. But at least the majority of it is related to TTC/pg/babies. I'm sure there are tons of political and religious message boards out there too.

I know. I actually agree with your original UO. I feel the same way. But I just leave it off TB. There's always someone that will take it farther and then it's just a downward spiral from there.
Not telling anyone what they can and cannot post--just stating my opinion.
True. But you have to admit just like a little teeny tiny micro percent of you isn't bothered by politics here as much as seeing the 1000th weigh gain/loss, flu shot, insert random topic that has 6000 threads in the last 24 hours here thread.
Even though I'd prefer politics and religion don't make their mark here, I'm not sorry for a break from the monotony once in a while either, whether its because of a political thread (which being honest doesn't happen a whole lot) or something about Kim Kardashian or a movie or Teen Mom or an animated gif thread or random pop culture non related topic that springs up from time to time.
No honestly, I just skip those posts. Usually their title is a good giveaway. If it's not, once I see what the OP is about, I just move on to the next post. Just like I would if there was a religion/politics type thread that was clearly stated as such in the title or OP.

Yep, I'm married to one of those crazy engineers! I used to be school teacher, but now I sah. I've been racking my brain, trying to figure out a Christian hs in the area. I went to a catholic hs, which is Christian, but most people just say catholic if its that. The only one I can think of is st Stephen/st Agnes.
I honestly didn't mean for it to get into an all out debate, hence why I didn't continue to discuss politics. I'm just so fed up with being labeled as one thing or another.
That's why when you posted it I had my original response of amusement. It usually goes downhill when you bring politics to the table. Either that or religion. Interestingly enough I haven't seen people get into it over religion here yet.
They do tea? Grrr I have to get my sh!t together and make the trip. If they have cadbury caramel's I'd probably just melt.
Do you all get a lot of snow out that way? It seems like the major weather (when it hits) misses us but dumps stuff either north or west. I swear its the mountains screwing with the paths. And all the tornado-y weather seems to go E-W north or south of us. We live in this tiny little crazy bubble. The derecho creamed everyone around us but we didn't even have a lot of trees come down. But 10 mins northwest on 50 every stoplight was down for days.
We got about an inch overnight. I've been expecting huge snowstorms, because when I was in school it seemed like loudoun county was always off!
I think that Barbie dolls are horrible toys to give to children and that they contribute to the detrimental western culture of what the "ideal" female body should look like and do nothing to promote a healthy sense of self esteem.

True.
About the iPad etc: NOWHERE did I say that my kid will be hooked to a screen 23 hours a day, that I think it's ok to play during mass, or that children don't have to make conversation with visitors. But I do believe that you can allow your children to play with an iPad/phone/computer once in a while still raising them to be responsible and social people.

Related topic: I was watching Dr. Drew last night (I don't know if anyone here saw it) but they had a Breast Feeding Doll that people were losing their shiit over. Its marketed to 5 or 6 year old kids (primarily girls as you can imagine). Some moms were calling in and freaking out over children "losing their innocence" or something.
These are the same women that said Barbie was a great toy for girls to play with. I had Barbies as a kid and mostly just tried to dye their hair. They all ended up naked or missing their heads. I don't think it gave me unrealistic expectations of an ideal female body or anything. I wasn't thinking like that as an 8 year old.
However, I wouldn't care about giving my daughter Barbie or the Breast Feeding doll. There are all kinds of "ideal" female ideas out there. June Cleaver, Barbie, a breast feeding doll-- whatever. Its up to you as a mother to give your daughter the confidence in herself. Toys are just toys for the most part. We don't see boys getting GI Joe getting taken away because it promotes war/violence/guns. I haven't seen this much hullabaloo over a boy's toy in forever.
Kids play with all kinds of toys, and remember half of them. I think parents get their panties in a twist in all kinds of ways over nothing. Toys are just toys, people. Kids will forget about half of them.

He went to Bethlehem Baptist out in Fairfax. I think a few of our friends went to St Paul VI and one went to Bishop O'Connell.
And congrats on the twins!!! I meant to say that earlier. My BFF had twins and I'm the proud godmother of the "strong but silent" one of the twins. They are adorable boys and I love how much personality they have even at 6 months. You're in for some serious fun!
This! I'm ALREADY fighting DH about this. My nephew is not even two yet and H thinks it's awesome that he knows how to play on BIL's phone or tablet.... or is fascinated by the little kids on them at the store. No, I would rather have a fussy, obnoxious kid then one who can't function without some electronic device.
Then again, I feel like I'm the pot calling the kettle black because I get sooo moody when my internet is down.
Yeah, I think this is one of the occasions where it is much easier to judge if you don't have kids yet (I know that is not the case for the one who brought this up) than when you do have them. I want my kids to be social and playful, but sometimes having an pacifier-with-screen can just be so... easy. We all need a break.
I want to limit our kids' screen time, but who am I kidding? I can't even convince DH to put his iPhone away most of the time.
I didn't mean to come off as I'm judging everyone around me who does give their kids electronics. I'm in no position to judge anyone about anything period. All I meant was that as much as it's interesting that toddlers know how to do stuff that I couldn't figure out until high school, I don't think that it's worth it. If nothing else from an economic standpoint that those phones probably cost $400 if they break, and are like $100 a month. I wouldn't let my toddler play with that. I couldn't afford a replacement, lol. DH and I don't have those kinds of phones so we wouldn't even be able to pacify our kids with them regardless if I could afford it.
One time my niece asked for my phone cause she was bored and was like "uh. Where are the games." I scrolled through and said "I think there might be tetris on here or something." She looked at me like I was an alien and asked what I use it for then and didn't believe me when I said I use it to make calls and sometimes text.
I guess as I whole I think it's sad that parents think that they have to pacify their kids. I used to work in retail and I would see so many mothers handing their LOs cell phones because they didn't want to be judged if their kids started crying in line because it was taking too long. Kids cry, kids fuss, kids don't want to sit in church, the grocery store cart etc. I think it would be better if our society as a whole understood that, rather than getting pissy poo about a 3 year old throwing a temper tantrum.

Oh, I totally know that school/church. It's actually not Bethlehem baptist anymore. My parents live right around the corner, so I see it a lot. I actually went to Paul vi.
Yeah, we're just now getting over the shock of the twins. I've always been very vocal about not wanting twins. Whelp, jinxed myself there. I think we just know what we're in for since we've done it with one already. We're getting excited now though.
