January 2013 Moms

For those who have had growth scans

Hi there! I have mainly lurked here and there but coming out of hiding to ask a question that's been weighing on my mind. I am a FTM due to have my DD on 1/27. However, I've convinced myself baby will more than likely be a Feb. baby. At 37 weeks my OB ordered an ultrasound because she was concerned that baby was measuring small. It turned out it was because she had already dropped so low (baby has been at a 0 station since 37 weeks) and according to my ultrasound baby was actually measuring fine, large in fact.

The ultrasound at 37 weeks estimated her at 7lbs 4 ozs. Now I know to take this with a grain of salt and even my OB mentioned that they can be off by up to a full pound. I just wondered if any of you January mommas that had already given birth found the growth scan to be accurate. Now that I am creeping up on 40 weeks I wonder how big she is now. I am going natural, though not 100% by choice (I have had previous spinal surgery that prevents an epidural) and I suppose I am just getting nervous about a big baby naturally. I know it can be done and I have faith in my body...just wondering if anyone could share there experiences in how much credit to place in an estimate of weight from a growth ultrasound. Thanks!

Re: For those who have had growth scans

  • We had a growth scan at 35 weeks because I was measuring 3 weeks behind based on fundal height. The scan found baby girl to be measuring right on track at 34/35 weeks on all measurements. They estimated her at that point to be almost 5 pounds. I thought the number was high! It concerned me especially if we did go to term. She was born at 41 weeks and 7lbs 2 oz. Personally, I think the weight estimate at our 35 week scan must have been off because I doubt she only gained 2 pounds between 35 and 37 weeks.

Remember most ladies here believe late term u/s to be off +/- 2 pounds.

  • All throughout my pregnancy, DD was measuring big. I had several growth scans because of that. She was always measured around the 75th percentile. I remember they said at 30 weeks that she was already 4 lbs, 6 oz. But, when she was born she came out a petite 6 lbs, 12 oz. So, yes, way way off!

  • Thanks for sharing ladies! It is reassuring. A woman I worked with assured me she had a fairly easy natural delivery of her 9 lb. daughter but I find myself getting more and more nervous everyday!

  • We had a growth ultrasound because I was measuring ahead. He was estimated to be 7 1/2 to 8 lbs at 37 weeks. We had him at 39 weeks he weighed 8 lbs 15.2 oz. I am sure he would of been way over 9 if we did not have him when we did.

  • I had one right around 39 weeks and they thought she was just shy of 9 lbs and a few days later ended up being 8lbs 3ozs.

  • At 36 weeks she was estimated to be 6 lbs 9 oz. a week later she arrived at 7 lbs 3 oz. so I think pretty accurate.

  • My growth u/s at 38 weeks estimated the baby at nearly 9 lbs. Dr said to expect the baby to be over 9 lbs when I was induced due to GD the following week. DS was 8 lbs 3 oz when he was born. When they told me how much he weighed, I said, "that's it?" Lol. I was also being warned of a giant head and that turned out normal size too.

  • I had an ultrasound the day before I delivered my son. It estimated 8 pounds, 7 ounces and he was actually 7 pounds, 12 ounces.

  • Probably not what you want to hear but I had a growth scan exactly a week before my induction and my daughter was estimated at 6lbs 11oz. She was born 8lbs 4oz so that scan was really off. One thing the doctor did tell me after is that if she had seen the scan of her face (she had huge chubby cheeks that the ultrasound tech missed) she would have known the estimate was off!
