Blood Work - 12 Vials?

I think I've been reading too many posts about Maternit21 and some of the other genetic blood tests, because I've confused myself.  At my first OB appointment, we went over genetic testing and I said that'd be something I was interested in.  At the end of the appointment, I went down to the lab and had 12 vials of blood taken for testing.

Did I already have this test and not know it?  I just thought that was normal blood testing, not the genetic stuff.  She said that she'd be sending the blood out and I'd know in a week if anything was abnormal.  It came back and everything was normal.

So... what exactly was I tested for there?  Anyone have any idea?

Re: Blood Work - 12 Vials?

  • I declined all genetic testing and at my first appt they drew 6 vials. So I'd be interested to see if anyone knows what all six (twelve for you) were for.

  • Right!?  This is my first pregnancy, so I was like, sure, 12 sounds right.  What do I know?

It's interesting you had six.  Maybe there was some extra stuff in there after all...

  • I opted for the NT scan and CF testing but I believe the NT blood work is taken at the time of the scan and they took 8 vials from me

  • There is a pretty broad range of genetic tests they could have run based on your family history, ethnic background and age.  Your doctor should have discussed what they'd test for specifically and given you the option to opt out of each one specifically.  I would call the office and ask them for the paperwork regarding what tests were run.

    How far along are you?

ETA:  just re-read and saw you said first appt.  Chances are they did all the routine pregnancy blood tests like screening for HIV.  This link covers a lot.

  • I'm 9 weeks and 4 days.  We did discuss family history, ethnicity, etc., and the agreement was I'm probably very low risk.  I was interested in testing because I have an anxiety disorder, so I'm all about as much information as possible.

I'm debating between calling and just waiting to ask at our next appointment on Valentine's Day.  Since everything came back normal, I guess I just don't want to make the receptionist hate me early :)

  • Oh yes!  Of course you saying this reminded me that they did test for all those STDs I knew I wouldn't have :) Thanks for the reminder!

I think it's just time for me to step away from Google...

  • I would just ask your OB what they tested for. I declined genetic testing and they took 4 vials, I believe.

  • they took a *lot* of vials from me. I saw the basket of them, but I didn't count (I also didn't watch!). It could have been twelve.

I do know that it only took one vial for the genetic testing. I am having the test where they are testing *my* genetics for lots of conditions (over 100) that I could be a carrier for. I do not yet have the results.

  • my first appointment they took three from me but I didn't opt for the genetic testing still deciding on that one and I don't think they tested for all std's either

  • I think I had 11 for my first appt- and there wasn't any genetic testing done- but I did have a liver enzyme test added that most women don't get. They automatically do the STD testing at my OB (if you consent to it) so that adds lots of vials.

  • My first bloodwork was weeks before my first appointment (they were checking for bloodtype and STDs and such) and they took 5 vials of blood then. For my genetic testing (we're doing sequential testing with the NT scan), they only took 1 vial one week before my NT scan. In a few weeks, I'll have one more vial taken to compare with the previous results. So not a lot of blood taken here.

  • I had approx. 12 vials taken after my first appointment. They did the genetic testing, blood type, hcg, etc. I can try and find the lab work when I get home and see exactly what they were for.

12 vials is a lot... I fainted. Embarrassed

  • I had 4 for the usual pregnancy panel, so like HIV, stds, all that. Then 3 for CF, SMA, and fragile X. You may have also been screened for other things based on your ethnicity. I am guessing you did not have the mat21, unless you are 35 or older. For my nt scan I had the choice of a blood draw or finger prick. I did the finger prick and they only needed 5 drops. But they may have needed more for the draw. You really should ask your doctor. You should know what tests they are running on you.

  • From what I understand... The materniT 21 test can be taken around 1012 weeks. I am scheduled to go in next weekweek 11 for me and have my blood drawn for that specific test. I was told that it takes about 2 weeks to get the results back.
    Hope this helps.
  • Sorry for the space problem above. Basically u can get it done between 10 and 12 weeks
  • We opted for Counsyl testing, and they took 12 vials from me and 1 from my husband at the first OB appointment.  A couple of weeks later, they came back with a report that said I wasn't a carrier for anything, and my husband was a carrier for one random nasty thing that the OB had never heard of.  The testing/report was pretty cool.

I had to go through recurrent miscarriage testing in November, and they took exactly the same amount from each of us.

I'm doing MaterniT21 tomorrow.  I have no idea what I'm in for--I was assuming that it was a simple draw...but that's what I thought the last two times, too. :)

  • It's unlikely that it was MaterniT21.  They'll call you with the results *and* the gender, if you want it.  My OB said not to do it before 10w3d.  But they'll start doing it at 10 weeks.

Also, apparently, MaterniT21 has a lot of to do w/r/t packaging--FedEx folders and such--so I figure it's recognizable.

(And they'd probably hit you with a bigger bill than normal--though the same was true for Counsyl).

  • 12 sounds like a lot! For both pregnancies they took 6 for me. I would definitely ask what they tested for, it can't hurt and you have the right to know.

  • Thanks everyone!  After reading everyone's responses I think I've pieced it all together - but I will ask my doctor at my next appointment.

Baby was such a surprise I think I was in shock for the first few weeks.  I'm finally out of the haze and curious as to what I was asking for after all :)
