I think I've been reading too many posts about Maternit21 and some of the other genetic blood tests, because I've confused myself. At my first OB appointment, we went over genetic testing and I said that'd be something I was interested in. At the end of the appointment, I went down to the lab and had 12 vials of blood taken for testing.
Did I already have this test and not know it? I just thought that was normal blood testing, not the genetic stuff. She said that she'd be sending the blood out and I'd know in a week if anything was abnormal. It came back and everything was normal.
So... what exactly was I tested for there? Anyone have any idea?
Re: Blood Work - 12 Vials?
I declined all genetic testing and at my first appt they drew 6 vials. So I'd be interested to see if anyone knows what all six (twelve for you) were for.
Right!? This is my first pregnancy, so I was like, sure, 12 sounds right. What do I know?
It's interesting you had six. Maybe there was some extra stuff in there after all...
There is a pretty broad range of genetic tests they could have run based on your family history, ethnic background and age. Your doctor should have discussed what they'd test for specifically and given you the option to opt out of each one specifically. I would call the office and ask them for the paperwork regarding what tests were run.
How far along are you?
ETA: just re-read and saw you said first appt. Chances are they did all the routine pregnancy blood tests like screening for HIV. This link covers a lot.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
I'm 9 weeks and 4 days. We did discuss family history, ethnicity, etc., and the agreement was I'm probably very low risk. I was interested in testing because I have an anxiety disorder, so I'm all about as much information as possible.
I'm debating between calling and just waiting to ask at our next appointment on Valentine's Day. Since everything came back normal, I guess I just don't want to make the receptionist hate me early
Oh yes! Of course you saying this reminded me that they did test for all those STDs I knew I wouldn't have
Thanks for the reminder!
I think it's just time for me to step away from Google...
they took a *lot* of vials from me. I saw the basket of them, but I didn't count (I also didn't watch!). It could have been twelve.
I do know that it only took one vial for the genetic testing. I am having the test where they are testing *my* genetics for lots of conditions (over 100) that I could be a carrier for. I do not yet have the results.
When you've been married this long, you need a ticker to remind you.

I had approx. 12 vials taken after my first appointment. They did the genetic testing, blood type, hcg, etc. I can try and find the lab work when I get home and see exactly what they were for.
12 vials is a lot... I fainted.

It's unlikely that it was MaterniT21. They'll call you with the results *and* the gender, if you want it. My OB said not to do it before 10w3d. But they'll start doing it at 10 weeks.
Also, apparently, MaterniT21 has a lot of to do w/r/t packaging--FedEx folders and such--so I figure it's recognizable.
(And they'd probably hit you with a bigger bill than normal--though the same was true for Counsyl).
Thanks everyone! After reading everyone's responses I think I've pieced it all together - but I will ask my doctor at my next appointment.
Baby was such a surprise I think I was in shock for the first few weeks. I'm finally out of the haze and curious as to what I was asking for after all
