Late to the Party **Update**

Micah is late to the crawling party. In fact, he still hasn't arrived yet. I know that many of you have already dealt with this though. I can't put him on the ground anymore. Within a minute, he's rolled himself onto his tummy and gets stuck. He'll get on all 4's and rock, but as soon as he tries to move, his limbs give out, and he starts accidentally scooting backwards while screaming. He screams until someone puts him back to a seated position for the whole thing to repeat itself.

He's great at standing unassisted at toys and cruising from one toy to another, but when he's done playing with it, he plops himself down on the ground and resumes the belly flop. Whenever possible, DH and I just sit on the floor with him to make the process go faster. We do let LO fuss it out and try while encouraging him, but is there anything else we should be doing to make this process less painful?

***Update: No one probably cares, but I want to tell the world: Micah finally crawled this morning! It's the goofiest crawl I've ever seen, with one knee on the ground, and the other foot almost in a standing position as he waddles his way forward, screaming the entire time. But he's finally crawling! He looks like quasimodo! I'm so glad he did it for us before I left for work. I would have been so upset if he had done it after I left, or worse yet, at daycare! DH and I both got to watch it together, and I was ironically showing DH a video on my phone, so I was quickly able to catch it on video! Yay! Baby gate shopping will commence this weekend!

  • Honestly, you can try to put a toy in front of him just out of reach, but the only thing you can really do is to wait. He'll crawl when he's ready to crawl. DD never did any rocking on all fours until one day (at 10 months adjusted) she just started crawling like she'd been doing it all her life.

Doctors don't even consider it a milestone anymore because some babies never crawl.

  • I'm not worried about when he'll finally crawl. It's the constant crying on the floor that breaks my heart. He can't play with his toys anymore without flipping over like a turtle on his shell. I know it's a phase he'll get through. I just don't want to miss the obvious.
