Harmony Prenatal test

We opted out of any testing with DS, but we are going to test this time around. It was a long road to get pregnant with 2, so I think we will both feel better if we do. Anyway we are looking at doing the Harmony Prenatal Test. According to my OB office it is fairly new, but also very accurate. Has anyone else done this test? TIA.

Re: Harmony Prenatal test

  • I'm doing MaterniT21 on Tuesday--this test looks similar.

I'm really nervous about it, but am ready to stop worrying!  Or at least start worrying about something else... ;)

Does Harmony tell you the gender?

  • I was given this option by my doctor because I am 35. Not sure if I really want to do this one. I'm thinking I will just stick to the NT scan and blood screen. Harmony testing is really new and can run about $800 without insurance. And many insurance companies do not cover it. I'm still waiting to hear from my insurance company if it's covered. If I do it though, it's recommended I do it in week 10. Which is next week. It just makes me nervous altogether!

  • I just did the MaterniT21 test yesterday (now the dreaded wait). I was told the only difference is that MaterniT21 will tell you the sex of the fetus (we already know we are having a girl since we did PGD testing so that wasn't an issue). We are expecting to pay about 200 - 285 regardless of what the insurance company pays -  but yes the PP was correct that without insurance the cost can be much higher. I believe they estimate to be about 98% accurate for Downs and about 91% accurate for others.

  • My OB doesn't offer the MaterniT or whatever it is test. There were about 4 different options for the tests, but the price was about the same for all of them. They did explain that most testing for this test has been on high risk patients, but now they are offering it everyone because the results have been so accurate. I'm not sure if the test tells you gender, but for me that isn't a big issue because I may opt to wait until the big US anyway.

    Decisions, decisions...
  • Good luck!  I'm going in tomorrow for mine.

BTW, for anyone who wants the test and is having difficulty finding it:

My husband and I split our time between three cities--LA, NYC and Buffalo. We're currently in Buffalo--which is the least desirable of these three places w/r/t medical care.  (I'm not saying the care is necessarily bad--just that it's not quite as accessible to us as the other two).  We had some difficulty finding MaterniT21 here.

Sequenom, the company that does the test, was very helpful.  They weren't able to give us a list of doctors who perform it here--but they were able to give us a list of labs where our doctor could call the test in.  Basically, your doctor would need to order the kit, give it to you, and send you with it to the lab.

We were able to find a doctor who did the test here--but if we hadn't, we were going to try the labs.
