Babies: 9 - 12 Months

a question from the 6-9 month board

have you ladies started to wheen your babies from the bottle and if so how do you do it? are you putting formula in the sippy cups? my daughter loves the playtex straw sippy cups. also we have always layed her down to go to sleep with her pacifier. any tips on how to start breaking that habit. my goal is to have her off the pacifier by a year . she only uses it when she goes to sleep.

Re: a question from the 6-9 month board

  • I EBF, so my biggest issue was that i stopped pumping early due to a semi low supply(or so I thought) so DD forgot how to use bottles. She is 10 months now and i'm starting to introduce sippys and bottles so she can practice.  It was very frustrating at first, and for about a month but now shes got the hand of it and when she doesn't want anymore she literally pushes it away.  I had to try a few different bottles as per other bumpers suggestions and that helped. Do it slowly, and try it before her solid foods. It may take a while but it will happen.

As for the pacifier... she was a huge paci baby. I was worried that she relied on it so much (and we always gave it to her) that she would be binking till she was 12. But in the last month or so... she literally doesn't want it in the day. If we did give it to her, she would just take it in and out because shes so interested in other stuff. I was surprised because she did it on her own.  Now at night and naps is a different story as she still relies on it big time.  I think im prepared to wait it out a bit longer and see if she does the same thing and doesn't want it. If it goes past a year i'll re evaluate.  Id rather her bink at night then get no sleep!

  • I am very anti-pacifier. DD1 didn't get one. DD2 had colic, and I had to give it to her. Now, of course, she is attached to her paci. Its even worse now, because when she sees it, she wants it. But if she doesn't see it, she could care less. At night I give it to her because I am afraid she won't sleep without it, and she sleeps so well. I guess when I am a little less harried and afraid of DD2 reverting to that awful colic cry, I will try taking the stupid paci away. I would suggest not trying all the things you listed at once. Try weaning, and then introduce sippy cups, etc.
