2nd Trimester

Large measurements?

Had 25 week appt and the midwife said I was measuring 28.5 cm /3.5 weeks ahead. Will be having a growth scan soon to check on baby.if you've had this issue did baby's growth slow down navy to measurment correctly or was baby born larger than the norm? Apperently they are confused because they said I've only gained 5 pounds the whole pregnancy, but it is my third baby.

Re: Large measurements?

  • Well, since it's your third and you are much further along than I am the reasons you are larger may be different then the theories for me being larger, but also maybe not... At my appointment yesterday the midwife first felt so get a measurement and was alarmed to feel how high my uterus was in relation to my belly button already.  Apparently it's pretty close to it at this point, which it's not supposed to be for another 6 weeks or so.  She guessed my gestation to be closer to 16 weeks, but we did a dating u/s at 7 so we know how far along I am.  She's guessing that it either has to do with the position of the placenta or the way my uterus is shaped.  We're doing a u/s on Monday to take a look, but she doesn't think it's the size of the baby causing it, but rather something unusual (although not concerning) about my uterus or the placenta.  But I feel like if that was the case with you that you would have seen it on the a/s.

  • She suggested that it could be too much fluid, or gestational diabeties which I had in my past two pregnancies but was totally controlled by diet and had no issues and normal birth weights or just that its my third and everything grew big faster. But they seemed a little concerned because I haven't been gaining a lot if weight like a person w/ G.D. would do.

Have they scheduled your GD test yet?  I know with a friend who had GD her last pregnancy they tested her at 23 weeks because she had a history of it.  Finding that out may help determine what's going on.  The fluid thing is a possibility, too.  But it is odd that if you are holding my fluid that you haven't gained that much weight since the baby + placenta + fluid should already weight about 5 pounds at 25 weeks.

  • They have me scheduled for my G.d test next week and then growth scan. I'm so confused why they measuring so large but according to them have gained very little weight. It seems like I would have gained more weight if I measure bigger than normal. I'm wondering if it could be stress related? I have a 1 year old and 4 year old and my husband is also recently deployed, but I usually handle his deployments pretty good by staying busy.
  • I'm confused, I guess.  What do you mean "according to them have gained very little weight"?  Do you know what your PP weight is and what you weigh now?  That comment just kind of made it sound like you were going off of what they said you weighed, not what you actually know to be your weight gain.  Just trying to get that cleared up!

Also how are they measuring you?  Did the pull out an actual tape measure?  Was it just an eye-ball look?  Did they feel?

  • No I don't know what my weight was pre pregnancy it i kinda feel like I gained more than 5 pounds I was sick in the beginning but it wasn't bad. i know it was a little higher than normal because i got pregnant only 8 mobths after my son was born so i still was trying to loose some from him. they used a tape measure.
  • I am measuring a full 2 weeks ahead of what my previous ultrasound showed.  My dr insn't concerned she says with multiple pregnancies you usually blossom faster than the rest.  Doctor also said in her experience that growth usually will slow down around 28 weeks and start back up around 35 weeks.
  • Weight gain doesn't have much to do with baby size. You should have had a GTT at 14 weeks with your history.

I had a 10 lb 39 weeker, I gained a total of 12 lbs. I lost 25 bs so I was still down 13 lbs from prepregnancy. I also had a 9 lb barely 37 weeker and gained 16 lbs after losing 35 lbs so still down 19 lbs. I didn't have MS, just used the GD diet.

Also, I would hope that the midwife would realize that since you are on your third, that fundal heights aren't accurate. Hell, I was measuring 48 weeks fundally the day my daughter was born, she was 9 lbs smaller than my 10 lber but the most I measured with him was 44 at 38 weeks.

  • I had this happen. I ended up having about twice the amount of amniotic fluid that I should have. My son was just over 6 lbs, so not big. But when my water broke...it was like Niagra Falls!

  • Thanks ladies! Glad to know it might not be anything to worry about.
I've had the GD. Test already once this pregnancy and I was fine and processing sugar normally. At my 20 week I measured normally, at 25 weeks I exploded. Lol
