Both head down

I'm 29.5 weeks and both babes are head down. I know there is still time for them to move, but I'm hopeful since I had a vaginal delivery with DS. My OB stated that even with both head down, Csection is safest. Hes not ruling it out, as we get closer he said we will look at sizes and positions and then decide. Obviously I'm not going to take any unnecessary risks but would like to know if anyone had both head down how did you deliver?

Re: Both head down

  • My twins were mono/di, both head down, and I delivered them vaginally. If you want a vaginal delivery, don't let your OB talk you into a c/s. I don't think a c/s is necessarily safer, especially if both boys are head down.

  • Mine were both head down and I delivered vaginally. Interesting that your OB would recommend c-section if both are head down. My MFM said that the only case where a vaginal birth with twins is the straightforward safest option for mom and babies is if both are head down. If you prefer a vaginal birth, I would push back or seek another opinion, but I think c-section is a reasonable choice too, especially if recommended by your doc. Good luck!

  • Mine were both head down and I delivered them vaginally.  Every OB in the practice recommended vaginal delivery for my situation... and that was knowing they were going to be 34 week (or less) preemies.  Is your OB comfortable doing a breech extraction if Baby B turns after Baby A is delivered?  I think many OBs are not, which is why they automatically go to c-section for twins.

  • My boys were both head down. I delivered vaginally via induction. My MFM felt that was the best option for both me and the babies.

  • Mine are both head down and I am scheduled to deliver them vaginally by induction next Tues. My OB actually gave me reasons why a vaginal birth is better than a C section and wanted to help me avoid a C section. I would find out the reasons why your dr seems to think C Section is the best and if you don't agree with it then I would definitely push for a vaginal birth.

  • Mine are both head down now.  My regular OB referred me to another OB in the practice that is comfortable delivering baby b breech if need be.  She also told me she has delivered a lot of twins and has never had a situation where she delivered one vaginally and the other by csection (which I know can happen),  She really reassured me and I feel very confident in her experience.  I hope things work out for you!

  • Mine were both head down from 20 weeks and I ended up needing a csection for failing to progress past 6 cm. The babies were bottle necked and thus neither would drop. They both wanted out first.

Then as long as Baby B is smaller than Baby A, I would definitely at least attempt a vaginal delivery.

  • Mine were both head down and I delivered vaginally and I wouldn't change it for the world!  They were 6 minutes apart.  I guess I don't know your complete situation or medical history but I would totally side-eye a doctor that was pushing toward a c-section with both babies head down.  It sounds like maybe that is what HE is more comfortable with.  If he keeps suggesting it for not other reason than "it is safer" (which I don't even know if that is true) I would push back or see if there is another OB in the practice that is more comfortable with a vaginal twin birth.  My babies were head down from 22 weeks on and my doctor never even mentioned a c-section.

  • Mine were di/di and both head down so I delivered vaginally and my OB was totally fine with me wanting to deliver that way. I almost wound up with a C-section because my cervix stalled out at 6cm for a few hours but after some manipulation of Baby B, I was able to contract more effectively and get fully dilated.

I didn't spend very long pushing with Baby A. Baby B decided to turn face up after her brother was born so I had to push long and hard with her and wound up getting an episiotomy but that can happen even with a singleton.

  • Mine were head down and my OB was strongly recommending a vaginal birth which is what I went for. Unfortunately, I ended up having to delivery baby A vaginally and baby B via csection. It was seriously awful and my OB was so apologetic though it was most definitely not her fault and she really didn't owe me any type of apology!

Even after everything I went through, I would still recommend trying for a vaginal delivery because the recovery will be so much easier than the recovery from a major surgery. I delivered my first DS vaginally and recovery was an absolute breeze compared to my double whammy this time around.

This was definitely a concern for us.  My doctor in his early 60s and has delivered A LOT of babies, cared for many moms expecting twins (but no higher than twins) and performed successful breech extractions.  There was no guaranee, of course, but after he told me his stats, I was very comfortable with him doing it. And I feel very lucky that he was even willing. I know a lot of doctors aren't.

  • Baby A was head down but Baby B was breech.  I had a vaginal delivery; Baby B came out butt first.  I really did not want a c-section and was adamant about trying a vaginal.  I had 2 easy and fast deliveries with my 1st 2 singletons so my dr knew I was a good candidate for a vaginal.  My dr had another dr in the OR, and he had done a lot of twins.
