Cough-Please help

LO is sick with a nasty cough, and he's coughing so hard he's throwing up repeatedly. It's been days since he's had a full meal in his stomach. To stop the coughing we've tried honey, cool mist humidifier while he sleeps, Benadryl (which he throws up with the next cough), Vic's baby rub on his feet, Eucalyptus steam showers, hot liquids to drink. NOTHING WORKS!!! The pedi said we're doing all the right things, and there is nothing else to do.

I'm panicking because he's naturally at the 15th % for weight and can't afford to throw up all his food. Not to mention, he can't sleep AT ALL. He's not going to get well if he can't sleep and keeps throwing up all his food.

Have any of you found anything that works??? Please? I'm getting desperate. I'm about to go out and buy childrens cough syrup and just half the dose or something.

-He's just thrown up again for the third time in 30 minutes.-

AGHHHHH!

Re: Cough-Please help

  • :(   That's so sad.  I feel so bad for you guys and for him.  I had this cough this year and threw up from coughing for 10 weeks; pregnant and ended up with a broken rib too!  The over the counter cough syrup did nothing for me.  I don't know if it would really work for a little guy.  Are you sucking out his nose well?  I know the mucus was what was getting me.  In the end I ended up with codine cough syrup to knock me out at night and predinsone to finally end the cough.  I would definitely take him back to the doctor if it lasts more than a few more days. Maybe very small snacky type meals or pedisure too so maybe it can digest between vomitting sessions?  Hope he feels better soon!

Sorry to hear you had this too and actually broke a rib coughing. That's horrible! I can't imagine dealing with that...and being pg on top of it! :(

He fights us badly with the nose sucker which doesn't make it very effective. Tomorrow I'll try small meals and hopefully he'll be able to digest something before the next coughing fit. Ughhh what a mess. Poor guy. Thanks for the advice.

  • Oh no, poor guy. I hope the cough calms down soon. I agree with the pediasure to try to get some nutrients in him. When B had a stomach bug we ended up feeding the pediasure in a syringe because he wasn't interedted in swallowing.

  • Aw poor baby. I l Ike the idea of the pediasure. If he's still bad in a few days though I'd call the pedi back and mention the weight concern. There might be other suggestions.
  • We have friends that used the cough syrup at this age. If it were that bad, I think I would definitely consider it too - our LOs are 2 years old, I would think one dose wouldn't hurt (disclaimer - not a dr here!). Maybe talk to your Dr. honestly and say that this is what you want to do and ask their opinion on dosage. Poor thing!

  • So sorry!  This was C last month so I know you feel!  Because of the vomiting, I took him to the pedi and they gave him a breathing treatment.  She also sent us with an inhaler.  It was a huge fight to get the meds in him but after a few sessions, it definitely helped and he stopped vomiting.  We used the inhaler for just over two days before he was sounding substantially better.  Just as a tip, all insurance was different, but we had to buy chamber to use with the inhaler which was NOT covered by our drug insurance and was about $60 on it's own. (I do plan to send it in to my regular medical insurance since I think it's covered under DME.)

Also, we received some sample of the Hylands Children's Cough that I used myself a few weeks ago and it really helped.  It's homeopathic but I've never used it for C.

Seriously, I'm at this point. Pedi won't help me. They keeping pushing the honey thing, and I keep telling them it DOESN'T FREAKING WORK! I'm frustrated because I feel like they're not listening to me. He's losing a pound a day and is only 25lbs to begin with. Thanks for telling me about your friend. I'm desperate and this is comforting.

We took him to the pedi yesterday and I was hoping this is what they would do. Instead they told us to give him more honey. Sad  I'm not sure how bad they're waiting for him to get before they're willing to do something.

Good to know the Hyland's stuff works. Don't know whether to try it or just go straight to a Children's Cough and Cold med.

Ahh, sorry, I missed that part.  Sad  Yeah, the honey works for about 10 minutes but totally not at all once he gets to that point.  Is there another pedi in the practice?  I might want a second opinion at that point.  With a cough that severe, they were worried about C getting pneumonia.  Can you call the nurse at your pedi and explain he's getting worse?

  • I've used a half dosage of the smallest recommended dosage of Mucinex for T when he had a really horrible cough that was waking him up all night.  It's not recommended for kids under 4 but it's a weight based requirement.

That's ok, I don't think I mentioned it in my original post. I called them last Friday and told them he had a cough so bad he was puking. They said to watch it and bring him in if it gets worse. It did, so I took him in yesterday. I was hoping at that point they'd get involved, but they said to just keep doing what I was doing (honey, humidifier, vics, steam, etc). That's when I started getting desperate. Maybe a 2nd opinion would be good. Thanks!

  • I second the Hylands Cold and Cough. We also got the nighttime version to use for her before bed.
