SUV / Wagon recs?

I am in the market for a different SUV.  I currently have an XC90 and would like to have another safe vehicle, the comfortable (we are in it a lot) and something with better gas mileage (I currently get 15/20).

Heres one of my biggest issues...the rear facing car seat and leg room in the front passanger side and the storage space.  I also have a large breed dog that needs the way back along with my large jogger and all of our stuff...(DS has sports stuff and his 20" bike in there).

does this exist in something affordable?   I only had a minute to glance at car max but it wasn't very promising...I put the car set in three smaller suvs and only one had space for a taller man to sit in the passenger seat and I was hoping to get something a little cheaper though its doable if thats the only option . I'm also not opposed to wagon though I have only driven a Volvo wagon before...this is bordering on mom car to me but if it saves on gas...

Also, I have two kids and I really do not want them on top of each other in the car, esp a 13 hour road trip! This why we have the baby behind the passenger seat.  I'm assuming this is why so many people have giant SUVs and minivans! I would love a car but that will have to wait when I don't have a giant dog, a giant stroller, and a bike to tote around!

thanks!!!

  • Love my Toyota rav4. The back seat adjusts to make more leg room or more back/ trunk room. Its good on gas mileage too.

  • I like my Subaru Outbackwe have two large dogs and it gets decent gas mileage. There isn't a ton of legroom in the back but I think the newer models have more we have a 2005. We think in when this one dies we might get a Nissan pathfinder. We love our Altima and the 2012 pathfinder is more like a wagon.
  • We have a Subaru Outback and a Toyota Rav4.  Both are good, but the Subaru gets better gas mileage and the Rav4 has more leg room in the back.  We also have a 40 lb dog.

  • We have a Chevy Tahoe and it's awesome. To be honest though we now wish he had gotten a Suburban. With three kids, a dog and a stroller and maybe some groceries the Tahoe can fill up fast. I do recommend getting Captains seats if you can, those are awesome and allow for more room in the middle row, we love ours.
  • I just bought a Nissan pathfinder and I'm in love!

  • We love our Jeep Patriot :) We take the lab, baby and suitcases in it just fine. (And it's a 15 hour road trip home!) I think it has awesome leg room even in the back, but I'm 5'2''. LOL. My 6'3'' brother doesn't fit very well....but my mom who is 5'9'' fits well. It also gets about 28-29mpg highway, which is great! (and it's pretty cheap for an SUV)

  • We just bought a Toyota Venza and LOVE it! I think it's classified as a wagon but looks more like a crossover. There's a ton of cargo space and the back seat actually has more leg room than the front seat plus the back seats lay back if you want to recline and take a nap! . I'm only 5'3" and i love that its not really too tall of a vehicle. i dont have to break my back to get LO in an out. And I think gas mileage is 20/25! I can't say enough good things about my Venza!

  • We have a VW Touareg, but we only have one baby. There's plenty of room with his car seat in the middle. We have a Britax Chaperone.
