Toddlers: 24 Months+

XP: One more travel question

Anyone travel with a lap "infant"?  My "infant" is going to be 23 months (just inside the range for free travel, has having an older child in your lap worked or was it just a PIA?

 Thanks!

  • PIA if you are traveling alone. I have done it a few times, but the bigger she got, the harder it was.  There simply isn't that much room.  You can't put the tray table down.  It is hard to reach your bag to get to the distractions.

If you are traveling with someone, it is much easier.

However, more times than not, there are empty seats on the plane, and in those times I have just simply moved to where she could sit in her own seat next to me.    didn't ask or anything- just moved.

    Good luck!

This- you may also want to pack a birth certificate in case the gate agents challenge you on the age of LO....hasn't happened to me, but I've heard horror stories....I just keep DS's birth certificate in my travel wallet.

  • Nope. DS was 20 months the one time we flew with him and he had his own seat. That was for an 11 hour flight though. For less than 2 hours I reckon lap iis fine.
  • I flew by myself with DD when she was 21 months.  It wasn't that bad.  If there is an open seat you can take it.

  • I think the last time I flew with DD1 as a lap child she was 20 months and it was such a PIA. I won't do it with DD2. We're flying this weekend and we bought both girls seats even though DD2 is only 13 months. It's really difficult to hold an active, mobile child for a long flight. Flying actually got much easier once we started putting DD1 in her car seat on planes.

  • We flew with my son when he was 22 months old - 1 flight was 1 hours and 2nd flight was 4 hours.  I was really worried, but he did great.  We did have a few toys, DVD player, and kindle fire.  He mostly watched, looked out the window, and took a nap on me.
