Parenting after a Loss

Slow Teethers??

How long did it take your LO's first tooth to come through?  B's pediatrician said it can take 4-6 weeks sometimes for them to cut through.  I first noticed his two lower front teeth just below his gums around 12wks old.  He will be 20wks tomorrow and those two teeth still haven't cut through.  We've had a really rough week with teething this week and last night it woke him up and he was screaming and crying in pain from 2am-4:30am.  It just breaks my heart seeing him in pain and I don't know what else I can do for him.  Is it normal for the first set of teeth to take a while?  I'm just hoping he'll have some relief in the near future!

Re: Slow Teethers??

  • You aren't going to like hearing this, but I swear he started getting teething discomfort somewhere around 5 months...but his first teeth (two came through days apart) didn't cut until 8.5 months.  Even worse, what I thought was bad teething pain for him early on in the game was absolutely nothing compared to what he had (and has had for each subsequent tooth) in the 24 hours before a tooth cut.

ETA: Are you seeing the white lines for the teeth yet?  That is usually a pretty good sign that there isn't long to go before they cut.

You can see white lines on his gums but they've been there for a little while.  I had the pediatrician look at his mouth at his 4 month appointment on January 7th and he said they were definitely teeth.  He keeps biting his hands and making a fist and pressing his face and cheeks.  The pediatrician checked his ears and they were clear so it's not an ear infection.

  • For DD it was 4 months between when we could see her teeth (they looked right there) and when they finally cut through.  Oh - and it was 1 month between the 1st and the 2nd.

The one advantage of a slow teether is no biting while BFing.

  • It varies so much from child to child apparently...  But I have a slow teether too.  I think she was 8 or 9 months old before her first one came in.  She is now 20 months and still only has 7 teeth...so teething is a constant on again/off again thing we have been dealing with...  But I agree with PP about checking to see if anything else could be causing that pain, just to be sure.

  • Once I actually saw the tooth, it took about a week for it to break.

But I thought DD started teething around 2 or 3 months. She had all the signs, but she didn't actually get her first tooth to pop through until 14m.
