Whole Milk Quantity?

Re: Whole Milk Quantity?

  • DD drinks a TON of milk if we let her, seriously probably more than 30oz if we don't pay attention and just  give her more when she asks.  That said, we try to stick to about 18oz per day and give water or diltued juice in between.  DD has had some tough belly issues, but a little apple juice seems to go a long way for her.  Have you tried any sort of juice (prune, pear, apple)? I know many are against the added sugar, but I'd rather that then meds personally.  Also, lots of people swear by yogurt keeping LO regular.  We haven't tried it though as DD refuses to be fed by us and hasn't mastered a spoon (at all) yet.  GL!

We had the SAME exact problems. DS constipation was awful and we couldn't seem to get a happy medium between constipation or diarrhea. We had tried to push fiber, but it really didn't help much (especially since he's become more of a picky eater).

What did work:  We cut out a lot of his dairy intake, and only give him 18 oz of whole milk a day max (3 six oz servings). We also give 4oz of prune juice (mixed with 4 oz of water) every morning, and we also upped his water intake during the day. This has helped TREMENDOUSLY!!! He has been pretty regular for the past 2-3 weeks since we started the regimen.

    Good luck.

  • We only feed DD about 12-15 oz. of whole milk a day. We are raising her vegetarian, so some of her protein sources are also dairy, so she is getting a lot of calcium from those (full fat yogurt, cottage cheese, etc). I just cut the morning bottle out today and gave her sippy cups at breakfast and lunch and she drank maybe 5 oz this morning and maybe 2 this afternoon, so it is still a work in progress.

  • I'm super sad for these babies, but I'm so happy we're not alone. Ugghh! We battle this soooo much :( Like every few days. And can't find a happy medium -- either too much or hard. And I can't stand the screaming when she is trying to poop. I've called the doc so many times, but we don't go for our 15 month until mid February, so we are just trying to make it til then.

She's not a huge juice drinker, but she likes water, and even when she does drink juice and tons of water, it doesn't seem to help. (We use the Mots for Tots with less sugar and also have used the Gerber prune juice.) My grandma will try to warm it (says it's supposed to help), but she won't even drink it that way.

The doc says if she does get constipated to put a qtip with vaseline on it to help ease it out - this has helped a couple of times. A last resort is a glycerine suppository, which I did buy, but thankfully haven't used yet!

She drinks about 24 oz of milk a day, which the doc says should be fine, but i'm thinking we're going to have to down it too. We've tried to cut out a lot of cheese too, which she would eat all day if I let her...We've been trying to gives prunes/pears all day, but geez, I thought we would be done with purees by now! haha

  • We give DS as much whole milk as he wants- often around 30 ounces.  We just make sure his diet his high in fiber in other areas and sometimes give apple juice and never deal with constipation.
