Oona

Re: Oona

  • I think it is a beautiful Irish name. I prefer Oona, but Una is nice too. I know one ten year old (in the US) and a bunch of others with this name in Ireland. It is also a popular cross-word puzzle clue; what was charlie chaplan's wife's name?

I don't get the "caveman" sounding thing, by that logic "Ava" and "Anna" would be caveman names too, it's just that you have heard them before.

Honestly, I hate it. It sounds (and looks) like a nonsense word to me. But I definitely prefer the spelling Oona over the other choices.

    This, sorry.

  • I'm not a fan of the name.

I've met one person with this name, and she spells it Una. She's in her 60s.

If I had to choose, I would pick the spelling Oona.

  • I love it. It reminds me of one of my favorite childhood movies, Legend (with Tom Cruise). I prefer the Oona spelling.
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • Sorry, strong dislike.

Yeah, I do wonder/worry about the "una what?" thing a little bit.

So question for pp who also notice that: would a similar reservation keep you from using Ann?

Actually yes, but I don't think most people think the way I do, lol. I like Anna, but DH nixed it because he immediately had the same issue with Ann.

It's a Bubble Guppies name. They all have strange names and I thought that it was made up...

That's the first thing I thought too, was isn't that the name from Bubble Guppies. Ahh to live in a house with a 4 & 2 year old.

  • My initial reaction was "no", and then I thought "well, maybe Una is okay." But then after reading all the replies I found myself liking Oona. I would think it was cool if I met a little girl with the name.

It's funny ? Luna is the compromise name that DH suggested last time around (he likes Lily and I like Oona). We may still go that route. But if my last few threads are any indication, you and I are pretty much the only ones around here who are on board with Luna.

  • I absolutely love it. I have never met anyone with the name, and I prefer Oona.

Haha, that may very well be. :) Our daughters would rock the name though.

I also think of Bubble Guppies. :) The name isn't for me, but I can see the appeal.

This for me too. I don't have a strong preference between Oona and Una. Do not care for the Oonagh

  • I lived in SF for 5 years.  I ran across 2 Oona's while living there.  Interestingly enough, both were in their late teens.  I think it's a very pretty name.  I like the strength of the vowel sounds.  It's a nice name to say.

My girl name falls along those same lines with regard to the predominance of the vowel sounds.  My daughter (it my LO is a she) will be named Ione (EYE-ohhn) after my grandma.

Anyway, I like Oona, and I like that spelling the best.
