Baby Names

which spelling? pronunciation?

DH is all about Mathias.  I'm considering it as a MN.  Seeing how it grows on me.

I did some googling and also found Matthias.

Which way would you say is the "correct" spelling and how would you pronounce them if you read them differently?

I'm not really sure! haha! When he first presented it to me I read it as

Math-thee-us?  Mah-thee-us?  Ma-thee-us? I can't seem to figure out how to type out the first part :P  I'm probably saying it wrong.

EDIT:  maybe ending in "is" sound instead of "us"

  • The only Mathias I know spells it with one T.

He's German American and he says it MAH TIE US but introduces himself as MAH THIGH US to anyone besides his family, because he says that's the American pronunciation. I love both.

  • I always assumed it was pronounced "math-i-us". In the last couple of years my daughters have had a couple of boys in their classes with that name though and they were both pronounced "matt-a-us".

  • I know 2 Matthias'...and they spell it with 2 T's.
  • Mathias. I wouldn't pronounce it differently for the extra t.

This. I went to school with a girl and he pronounces her son's name "Math.E.us". When my spouse wanted it for if we had a boy. No matter how many times he said "IT'S NOT THAT! It's Mah.Tee.ahs!" I couldn't stop pronouncing it like the little boy I know. So it was nixed.
