I always assumed it was pronounced "math-i-us". In the last couple of years my daughters have had a couple of boys in their classes with that name though and they were both pronounced "matt-a-us".

I would pronounce them both the same but prefer the spelling Mathias.
This. Having taken many, many years of German, I pronounce it mah-TEE-ahs.
This. I went to school with a girl and he pronounces her son's name "Math.E.us". When my spouse wanted it for if we had a boy. No matter how many times he said "IT'S NOT THAT! It's Mah.Tee.ahs!" I couldn't stop pronouncing it like the little boy I know. So it was nixed.

I'm not really sure! haha! When he first presented it to me I read it as
Math-thee-us? Mah-thee-us? Ma-thee-us? I can't seem to figure out how to type out the first part :P I'm probably saying it wrong.
EDIT: maybe ending in "is" sound instead of "us"

I'd say them both the same but I would spell it Matthias. This is a GP for me; love it.
