Eliminating MOTN wakings.

I've found something that works to eliminate the unnecessary night nursing, without CIO.

Ds was getting up on average of 4 times at night to comfort nurse, even though he's completely capable of putting himself back to sleep. Last night was night 3 of our experiment.

I started with one nursing session at a time, btw.

Night 1: I shortened our 5 minute nightly nursing session to 3 minutes. He fussed for about a minute and went back to sleep.

Night 2: I shortened it to 2 minutes, he didn't fuss and went back to sleep.

Night 3: I didn't nurse, I patted his chest, he fussed off and on for 5 or so minutes and went back to sleep.

I suspect that tonight he may not wake up for that nursing session! We shall see.

  • Keep me updated on this please. I willing to try just about anything before CIO.  (I seriously just gave him a 2oz bottle with cereal in it :/ and I know that's a myth)

  • Good job!

I feel like we've been in this sleepless boat together so long. So, if you can do it, I can do it.

I'll update tomorrow on how tonight goes.

Ds was getting up 5 times at night. Only one of those he was actually eating! [I will NOT eliminate that one, btw.]

I think it's been 10 weeks of sleepless nights! Every since the 12 week growth spurt.

If I can do it, anyone can do it! Lol.

  • I don't nurse but we've been doing something similar to try to eliminate that feeding but really all I have to do is pop a pacifier in and turn on his mobile once and he is back out. He is still waking up twice but he only eats one of those times, and twice is way better than 12 to 15 times!!

  • Good luck and keep us updated! We've switched to first replacing pacifier. If that doesn't work, replace and pat chest for a minute. Then, replace and snuggle. Finally, replace and nurse. He RARELY gets to the nursing stage (he's STTN before, so I know he's capable) and one of the first three steps usually stops it. Here's hoping we all get to sleep all night soon!

  • Keep us updated over the next several nights!  I really hope this works for you.  Like PPs mentioned I'm willing to try anythng before CIO!

DD is waking still waking frequently at night.  Sometimes I feel like it is really inconsistnat!  At around 6-8 weeks she started going 5-6 hours between feedings at night.  This lasted a little over a month ... BUT then for the past 2 months we're back to the 3 hours between nightly feedings.  Sometimes 4 hours.  Rarely more.

In general if it't been 3+ hours I will nurse.  And she normally EATS for quite a bit.  Usually her eyes stay closed the whole time.  I don't think its comfort nursing, because she's eating.  She may eat for 5-8 minutes and then she'll pull off and drift into a deeper sleep.  Then I move her to her PNP.

If its been less than 3 hours and I feel like she ate well at her last feeding, I'll just pop the pasi in.  Usually she zonkes back out imediatly.  Sometimes I'll have to put in back in a minute later.  If after 2 attempts with the pasi, I assume she's hungry and nurse her.

I'm still a worry wort about not knowing if she's eating enough.  Ive gone back to work, and she takes bottles during the day.  Although sometimes she'll go 4 hours beween the morning nursing her and her 1st bottle.  Which is frustrating that she wakes me up every 3 hrs but then goes 4 hours in the mornng at DC.  Not fair!  They offer at 3 hours and she frefuses, but then takes it an hour later.  Then when I'm home she is a very distracted nurser.  So I'm not sure how much she is getting from me during the day.  She seems satisfied both when she's at DC and when she's with me.  But I guess I don;t mind the extra night nursings if she's making up for not eating enough during the day.
