help me fatten LO up...

R has had a rough week. In a matter of 6 days, he was taken and admitted to the ER twice and diagnosed with: stomach virus, double ear infection, and now pneumonia. Needless to say, he has been CRANKY! Well, on top of all that, his appetite has been nonexistent. He's lost 5 pounds this week. He was already on the small side for his age. Well, his appetite seems to be back today, so tell me...what can I give him to fatten him up but not upset his poor stomach too much?

  • Avocado, seems mild, nutritious and fattening.

  • Yikes!! Sorry to hear about your LO. P has been under the weather and hasn't had much of an appetite this week and so I gave him Kraft Mac and cheese for the first time today and he tore it up! Just an idea.
I hope your LO gets well soon!

  • I vote for avocado too.  Toast with real butter? Friends of mine have had dr's orders to get their LO to gain weight so if you are still looking for suggestions once his belly settles, let me know and I can get you in touch with them or get suggestions from them. I remember they had her eat a lot of cream, butter, etc but I can't remember what else.  I know she was instructed by a nutritionist, so it would be probably be good advice.  Sorry he's having such a hard time.  N's only 20 pounds, I'm terrified he'll get sick and lose weight.  He's so tiny to begin with.

  • I did pick up some avocado, so plus one for me there. He's never been a big toast fan, but maybe he'd like it with real butter....

...and thanks, jk, I may take you up in that. He is now down to 19 lbs, so I want to get some meat on those bones!

  • Pouches are a huge hit around here! If you make your own, you can add stuff like avocados. Nora probably eats 3x her veggies in a day because of pouches.

  • oooh how about cream cheese?  N loves it.  He licks it off the bagel and goes back for more.  Would he eat yogurt or peanut butter or cheese strings?  How about smoothies made with fruit and whole milk and yogurt.  I have a smoothie recipe book if you need some suggestions.  I'm always trying to feed N fatty stuff.  He's so picky.  It's so scary when they're so small.

Excellent ideas JK!  Thanks and keep them coming.  P is a little peanut and I am always looking for ways to get some fat in his life.  Thanks :-)

  • Ensure or Boost instead of water or juice in a sippy.

    Full fat yogurt.

Potatoes with lots of cream and butter.

French toast with a lot of egg and cream in the batter.

Wes loves velveeta probably gets it from me, and anything broccoli and cheese.

  • Can he eat peanutbutter? That is a good one.
