Father to be with spinal cord injury...Any suggestions what to register for ?

Hello !  My husband and I are expecting our first child.  My husband has a spinal cord injury, more so mimicks a stroke patient, but we need help to find easy or modified baby stuff to help make his life and the baby's life easier.  Does anyone have any suggestions ?  Thanks !

  • As an OT this is a great question and I will spend some time thinking about it. My first thought was a front carrier like a baby bjorn, but how is his walking balance?  Items like a boppy pillow might help with positioning for bottle feedings or just spending time together. This might be a good time to call an OT at an outpatient hospital for some consultation.

  • What things does he have issues doing? If we know what he has issues accomplishing we can help out with what you two could use to make life easier.

This! It would help if we knew what his limitations were.

One thing that may help is using a space saver high hair which attaches to one of your dining chairs with a harness and will keep the baby at the same level as your dh when you all are eating so your husband wouldn't have to get up or bend over which could make it easier for him to tend to the baby. They have a lot of cute space saver high chairs by fisher price and I've noticed a lot of parents have been opting for those versus the traditional chairs. I hope that helps.
  • Yes please more info! Need more info to get my OT brain working. :) What all is affected or what level is the SCI?

I had a young man who had a SCI and I suggested he use a baby sling (those similar to the ones mothers use for BF'ing) to help support the newborn while feeding and playing. Also boppypillows work great for support.

Im going to keep an eye on this post. It looks like you have 2 OTs to help you out.

I do second calling an outpatient clinic or a rehabilitation clinic. Many nursing home facilities also have a rehabilitation wing, in which you can ask the occupational therapist there and can probably give you more ideas.

Again, give us a little more details, and I will be more than happy to fish around come up with ideas. :)

  • Oh My gosh I have not been able to get on but I am so lucky you guys reached out to me.

My husband is a highly functioning, diagnosed quad.  He actually more so mimicks a stroke patient. His right side is mainly affected. Meaning he has a clenched right and and drop foot on the right.  He walks with the use of a cane and just has issues with bending at the knees.  He has had episodes of falling but for the most part they are due to spasms.
