separation anxiety question...I think it's begun for us

Oh man, I think we we've hit separation anxiety BIG TIME!  DS used to be great playing on his own for 10-20 minutes if both of us needed to do a quick chore or something, but the last couple of days, no way.  One of us has to be on the floor right next to him or hold him or he wines or cries instantly.  It's even been as bad as if both of us are in the room and one leaves he whines or cries. If we are next to him or holding him, he's happy as can be. 

Question is...remind me, can seperation anxiety start this early, or is this likely something else?  (DS is about 7.5 months old).

My DS is almost 7 months and he started doing this last week. Usually we can leave him on his exersaucer or jumperoo for some time if we need to get stuff done. But now, he instantly cries or whines when we leave his sight!

My DD is only 6 months and she cries when I leave the room all the time.
