Multiples

How do you know?

I am currently pregnant with my third child or more ( I go to the doctor tomorrow ) but I have a huge gut feeling that I am having twins. I have put on about 15 pounds so far (estimated 12 weeks) and I'm already starting to show.

My grandfather was a twin and I have another set of twins in my family. Did  you mommas know right away? Did you have a gut feeling?

  • Ultrasound.

We even did fertility treatments, so we knew our chances of multiples was greatly increased. Even then, I still dropped the 'F' bomb when we saw them on the screen.

  • PPs are right. u/s is the only way to know for sure. I did have a gut feeling that it was twins. And with my first few betas being so high I "really" knew.  And sure enough at about 6 1/2 weeks the u/s confirmed it!  However that doesn't mean that I didn't start shaking uncontrollably and DH burst into happy/nervous tears.

  • I took Clomid and while I knew there was a chance, I was shocked when the U/S tech told me. Also, I lost weight until 17w with minimal m/s and no vomiting, so I odon't think weight gain is any indication of how may you're carrying.  Also, until about 14w, I was actually smaller with my twin pg than with my singleton, so I wouldn't say that's a clue either.  I wish you luck with your pg no matter how many you're carrying, but the only way to know is by U/S.

  • We did IVF so I knew there was a chance, but it still shocked me at the ultrasound.  There was no indication that I was having twins except the ultrasound.

  • We did IVF and transferred two embryos. I had an inkling they both implanted because at 3.5 weeks pg, I was super fatigued. In my first pg, which I lost at 8 weeks, I didn't feel that way, especially not so early on. That was the only thing, and I knew it could still be a singleton. Every pg is different, ultrasound is really the only way to tell.

ETA that if this is your 3rd pg, it doesn't seem unusual that you'd start showing early? Also, I only gained 6 pounds in the first tri, and that's because I ramped up my caloric intake when I found out it was twins. Congrats on your pregnancy either way!
