Baby Names

Girl name finalists - 6 days until EDD - Clicky!

First, I apologize for posting my third clicky this pregnancy with roughly the same names. I promise this is the LAST one! We have narrowed it down to two and will choose once she's born. Side note: LN is Italian, DS has an Italian FN, we love names that end in -a. I love both names but they each have strikes against them: Livia - ancient Roman name, NOT a derivative of Olivia. Strike: frequently correcting people who mistake it for Olivia. Sofia - We all know how popular they are, especially in my region. In 2011 there were a 20,000+ out of 1,000,000 named Sophia/Sofia/Sofie (babycenter.org). Strike: will she be only one among many in school, constantly known by her name plus middle initial? Middle name will be Marie (also ultra popular) for my beloved grandmother and DH's mother.[Poll]

  • Sorry, it eliminated my paragraphs!

  • I vote Sofia Marie. I like Olivia (that's DD's MN) but I'm not a fan of Livia. I love Sofia although I prefer the spelling Sophia. If we have another DD that will be her MN!

Couldn't vote because of all of this.

  • I voted Sofia/Sophia Marie.

I know you have been battling this out for a while. If you really like Sofia/Sophia this much then use it. You may regret it if you don't.

I also really like Livia. I think it's beautiful.

They are both good names. Wishing you luck!

  • Both names are nice, but I chose Livia because I prefer less popular names.

  • I love Sofia, though I prefer the Sophia spelling because with the F it makes me think of a couch.

  • I voted for Sofia. I also like Livia, but I think the confusion with Olivia would really annoy me.

  • I really like Livia.
  • I voted Livia because I think it's pretty and have never heard it before.

But just something to consider, if the biggest strike against Sofia is that it is really popular, you will have the same problem with Livia.  Yes, it is a different name than Olivia, but in school when she gets called on it will still be hard to differentiate between Livia, Olivia P, and Olivia S.

  • I like both!  I voted Livia b/c it is less popular, but if you just love sofia I would go with it.

As someone named Amie- both super popular when I was born and spelled "wrong" I can sympathize with both of your strikes and often having to correct people.  While annoying sometimes, its not like it was that big of a deal.

  • Love Sofia Especially spelled the italian way :)

Do not like Livia at all because it seems to be missing the O

  • Livia gets my vote because Sofia is just too darn popular for my taste.  Plus, I love the NN Liv/ Livie!

    Good luck to you!

  • I voted for Sofia, I like it better than Livia. Also prefer it with BB Luca, Luca & Livia is a bit too matchy to me.

Wishing you a quick and easy L&D!

  • We have a Great Aunt Livia pronounced Leevia and she's straight off the boat from Italy. So that's my vote. Despite the spelling, if you pronounce it that way, it sets it apart from Olivia.

  • I really like Livia.  However when I ran it by DH he immediately thought of Livia Soprano, who was kind of a whack job.  Doesn't really bother me though...
  • I was a history major and studied Livia. She was pretty impressive. It would suck to be constantly correcting people, but it is a legit, awesome name.

  • I vote for Sofia but if you want an Italian first name for your little one, have you thought of Serafina? Serafina Marie sounds pretty to me! :)

  • I voted for Livia. I know a Livia and it wasn't that hard to understand that her name is not Olivia. AND with social media like facebook people see the name more in writing which helps to learn it.

  • I voted Livia.  While I love Sofia, I'm an elementary school teacher -- and I've noticed that after I've seen the same name on a lot of kids, it loses some of its specialness.  It just doesn't seem as pretty anymore.  I've never had more than one Sofia in my class, but we've often had several in the second grade at the same time (in different classrooms), and we're sure to have one every year.  I'm in California, so not your area of the country, but that does give you an idea of the popularity.  No, there won't be five Sofias in every classroom -- but she'll definitely know LOTS of others growing up.

Livia is beautiful, and even though it's bound to be confused with Olivia sometimes, you can always explain its origins briefly:  "It sounds like Olivia without the O; it's an ancient Roman name."

     Good luck!

I read a survey of Sofia's and a lot of the responses were they were often called "sofa" as a tease/nickname.

I want to like Livia but I do think it will come across as a trendy version of Olivia. Have you considered Lydia?

I would want Lydia spelled Lidia for the Italian pronunciation, but just not crazy about it.  Makes me think of "lido" in Italian which means beach.

Yes, I tend to pronounce it the Italian way LEE-vee-uh but DH likes the sound of Li-vee-uh better.  I have a feeling if we choose it, she will be called LEE-vee-uh on occasion but Li-vee-uh in general.

Makes me think of Giada DeLaurentis and how she says ree-COT-tah and other Italian words when she's demo'ing. :)

Serafina was on our long list, but in the end I didn't care for the flow of any of our four syllable choices.  It is pretty though.

  • Just realized that your son's name is Luca.  That makes me like Livia even more, since they're both similar to popular names but much more distinctive.  Luca and Livia -- like Lucas without the S and Olivia without the O.  :)

  • I love Livia, nn Liv. It's beautiful.

As a Jen from the late 70's I just can't go with SUCH a popular name. It's always bothered me to be one of many Jen's and it still happens all the time. I'm ok past top 10, but Sofia is just SO popular.

  • I don't care for Olivia, but I like Livia! and the nn Livie :)
