Toddler Mom Check-In

Happy Monday, toddler moms! It's frigid here in MN today. Wish I could have stayed home and snuggled with DD all day.

This check-in is for moms with a toddler(s) age 12-36 months.

What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

QOTW: What have you done for yourself lately? Or do you have something coming up planned for yourself? Or time to think of something? Sometimes we get wrapped up in everything we have going on as moms so this week I thought I'd send a reminder to take some time out to take care of us too. :)

Re: Toddler Mom Check-In

  • Hi all, mind if I join? Lucas turned 1 on Dec. 29, so he?s almost 13 months now!

What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment? Well, he still hasn?t started walking yet, but he loves standing up and while holding on to stuff, taking little steps. He also loves to crawl around and around in circles, haha

What challenges are you currently facing? Well, I have 3 issues...

    1. He likes to grab/hit/scratch me in the face and I pull his hand away and say no, but he thinks it?s funny and that it?s a game. So I just try to distract him with something else. Anything else I can do?

    2. He?s not interested in feeding himself. The only thing I can get him to grab and put in his mouth himself is Cheerios. Everything else he just plays with. He likes me or DH to spoon feed him. Even with his bottles he is lazy. Very rarely will he grab/hold onto them himself. Any advice?

    3. He goes to sleep very late. Like between 10:30-12am. Which is fine considering he sleeps late too and I am a night owl anyways, but is there anything I can do to try to get him to go to bed earlier? He usually wakes up around 10ish, takes one nap from about 2-4pm and then is awake until bed time. I?m not really into the whole sleep training thing. In my opinion, you can?t force a baby to go to sleep if he?s not sleepy and if he is sleepy, you can?t make him stay awake. At least that?s my experience with Lucas. Is there anything else I can try besides sleep training?

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently? Well, he can only say a few words right now, but he makes us giggle constantly. He?s recently learned that he can ?dance? by wiggling his little body around and it is hilarious!

QOTW: What have you done for yourself lately? Or do you have something coming up planned for yourself? Or time to think of something? Sometimes we get wrapped up in everything we have going on as moms so this week I thought I'd send a reminder to take some time out to take care of us too. :)

My birthday is next Friday so my MIL will be keeping Lucas for the night and hubs and I are going to do dinner and a movie, so that should be nice :-)

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment? Lots of singing and counting. Also, helping mommy cook. We've been amazed at how we can have real conversations with her now.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.) Well, about half an hour ago I was totally discouraged about the poop portion of potty training, but then she just pooped in the potty. The other challenge is that she's in a very contrary stage, as in shouting "No!" whenever I speak to her. Not cute.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently? Probably, but I can't seem to remember at the moment.

QOTW: What have you done for yourself lately? Or do you have something coming up planned for yourself? Or time to think of something? Sometimes we get wrapped up in everything we have going on as moms so this week I thought I'd send a reminder to take some time out to take care of us too. :)Good reminder. I think I painted my toenails about 2 months ago, and it's really time to schedule a haircut.

She is climbing everything!  And she is jumping a lot lately too.

What challenges are you currently facing?

Things are actually pretty good overall right now.  She fights going down for a nap though--I think she's going through the stage where she doesn't want to stop playing.  I know she is tired though bc she will fall asleep in less than 5min.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

She yells, "Hey!" a lot at people--not sure if I said this last week or not.  But she'll walk up to people and say it, or if DH or I are "napping" in the recliner and the other is playing with her, once she notices our eyes are closed she runs up and yells it too :)

QOTW: What have you done for yourself lately? Or do you have something coming up planned for yourself? Or time to think of something?

I just bought a new diaper bag :)

  • New accomplishment: She pretty much learns something new every single day. I can't keep up with her! Her latest thing is jumping, and dancing to classical music with me. We have a lot of fun with it :)

Challenges: She still fights diaper changes all. the. time. I plan on working on the whole PT thing after we get back from Disneyland in March. I think she's ready...

Funny say/do: She likes to share her food with her stuffed animals. One day she lined them all up on her table and went down the line saying "[animal] bite."

QOTW: I don't have time to think of anything for myself. School just started back up so I have class 2 nights a week, an online class, and a full time job. Participating in the check in is about all the time I have... and that's only because I don't have class tonight.

    I married a ginger.

What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

She loves to help us feed the cats.  She gets 2 plates and a can of food and brings it to their spot.  Then brings their bowl over to refill with crunchies, and pets them gently after she puts the food down.  She is so proud of herself for helping!

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

Meal times can be a little frustrating.  We think the throwing of the food over the side is getting better, but she loves to dump stuff in her milk or dump her milk into stuff and fish her hands around in it.  I know some mess is normal but she gets a little ridiculous sometimes and I don't always know when to curtail it vs letting her explore the textures, etc.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?  I was singing Roy Orbison's "You Got It" the other day and she started singing with me.  I thought I would die laughing it was so cute.  Just what I needed that day.

QOTW: What have you done for yourself lately? Or do you have something coming up planned for yourself? Or time to think of something? Sometimes we get wrapped up in everything we have going on as moms so this week I thought I'd send a reminder to take some time out to take care of us too. :)

My best friend is turning 40 in March and a bunch of her friends are going on a scrapbooking retreat for the weekend.   I can only join them for one of the days, but I am so excited to have that time w/her and to spend working on our next baby's baby book.   Sadly, I don't think our current pg is viable, so working on that project may be hard at that time....I'm hoping it will be healing though, and source of hope that we will someday have another miracle even if this baby is not ok.

  • I'm not sure we had anything new happen this week. She's singing more, which is cute.

Nothing particularly challenging this week. We've sort of hit a good routine for the time being, I'm hoping it sticks around for a bit.

I can't think of anything she said or did this week that was particularly amusing.

Not much. I got my hair cut and colored (for the first time since last March...) just before Christmas. H and I are going on vacation in Feb sans child. I might get a massage at the spa at the hotel...

IMO sleep training isn't at all trying to force a baby to sleep when it isn't tired or keeping them awake when they are sleepy.  I did sleep training with my son (modified Ferber) and I follow his sleep cues, I don't force a schedule on him.  At all.  What you might be able to try is pushing things in 10-15 minute increments in the direction you want them to go.  If you are trying to teach him to soothe himself to sleep but don't feel Ferber is for you, the No Cry Sleep Solution may work.

What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

When we go outside he likes to run and crunch through the leaves (I'm in So Cal, we still have some here).  He's also started screaming lately, like a squealing with glee kind of scream.  He especially does it during bathtime when he's splashing up a storm. I think he's on the cusp of a verbal explosion.  Starting to eek out parts of words and get frustrated that he can't communicate what he wants to tell me.

What challenges are you currently facing?

The frustrations of knowing what he wants but not being able to say the words to tell me.  Not uncommon for him to come over for a drink/snack...but then slap my hand away if I choose which one it is he wants incorrectly, for example.

Also, just today he started running away squealing with the offending item when he was told no.  Is this a sign that he knows what no means and I need to start consequences for not listening?  *sigh* He can't possibly be that old....

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

We had a sweet moment (and an excellent example of why I think the verbal explosion is coming) the other day after bathtime.  I told him I was going to give him a kiss and then planted on his forehead with an big MWAH sound.  He kept leaning his forehead in for another one.  Then he ran all around the bathroom going "ssss" (pretty sure that was kiss).  He's come back and lean his forehead in.  Repeat the 'ssss' thing.  He did this several times.  The moment ended with him coming up to me and planting an open mouthed toddler kiss on my cheek while going "mmmm".

It's been a trying week sleepwise.  Not newborn level, not even close, but waking up at 430am just sucks.  Apparently when my son is about to do something new (like walking) he wakes up ridiculously early.  That's been us this week.  Today was a particularly trying day and at one point I said to DH, "I need a Momcation".  He said to take a couple hours and do whatever I wanted.  I took a nap.  I've felt so much better since.

  • I am not super active on here anymore since I am busy with school and DD and stuff but wanted to join in anyway..

What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?
She is really into putting things into her purse and taking them out and showing them to you and then putting them back in lol. No new accomplishments really.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)
Temper tantrums. For everything. She is the biggest drama queen.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?
Not really. It has been pretty much non-stop fit throwing the last couple of weeks.

QOTW: What have you done for yourself lately? Or do you have something coming up planned for yourself? Or time to think of something? Sometimes we get wrapped up in everything we have going on as moms so this week I thought I'd send a reminder to take some time out to take care of us too. :)

Went shopping without DD on Saturday.

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment? Hmmm. He's getting really good at recognizing when he messes up & has started saying "Sorry" unprompted.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently? He started doing things more independantly & if he does what he sets out to do (ie: climbing off a chair) he pumps his fists in the air and yells "I did it!". & while sitting on the couch watching t.v yesterday he put his arm around me & kept calling my honey. It was adorable. (Also see my AW: PIP post.)

DH has been great about watching M so I can sleep as well. I need sleep.

I think at that age whenever M would hurt himself we would call it an owie. So when he'd grab/hit/scratch my face I'd say owie, & I'd show/tell him how to touch gentle. That way he could still touch my face, but it didn't hurt.

  • What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment? Rylan is really starting to put sentences together. He is stringing between 3 and 5 words together now. He is also copying everything we say!

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.) We are just facinf the normal 2's. He is pushing limits and wants to do everything on his own.

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently? I had the hiccups yesterday and he looked at me and said. Hiccups?! Mama ok? So sweet.

  • Hi! I haven't been here in SO long and am happy to recognize some of you!!

My DD is now 2.5 - why does it have to go so quickly???

What is your toddler really into right now/their new accomplishment?

She loves to count and counts everything - she gets up to 14/15. She also sings her ABCs constantly, as well as Twinkle Twinkle.

What challenges are you currently facing? Other toddler moms - this is the part where we can chime in and help one another with ideas/suggestions for working through challenges (behavior issues, etc.)

She still throws things - her cups, food, fork, etc. Sometimes it comes out of nowhere in the middle of dinner, other times it's out of anger. She has been throwing food since she was 8 months old.... it's beyond frustrating. I've tried everything, and nothing seems to help. She just picks up her plate and it goes flying

Did your toddler do/say anything particularly funny recently?

Her new phrase yesterday was "Oh man!!" Cracked me up when she walked in the house saying it.

QOTW: What have you done for yourself lately? Or do you have something coming up planned for yourself? Or time to think of something? Sometimes we get wrapped up in everything we have going on as moms so this week I thought I'd send a reminder to take some time out to take care of us too. :)

Last Saturday I ran out and got a mani while DD was sleeping and DH was home. DH travels pretty much every week so it's rare that I get any me time.
