Natural Birth

Hello

Hi ladies! Just wanted to drop in and say hi as I hope to start using this board more often. FTM so I don't have much of an idea as to what I'm doing. I have yet to discuss natural birth with my MWs. I am having the baby at our local hospital as a birthing center isn't really in our cards where we live. I am fortunate enough that using MWs rather than Docs are standard here. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a good time to bring up wanting to go natural with a MW and what type of questions to ask. I have a habit of forgetting all of my questions at the appointment and I am an introvert who has a hard time voicing my wants and opinions. So any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Hello

  • Are you an introvert or are you shy? Those are two different things. I'm a shy extrovert and as such I have to write down all my questions or else they fall out my ears. ;) So I suggest writing your questions down, and maybe bringing someone with you to the appointments. My DH asks all the questions I forget to ask. ;)

  • Since you are going with a MW most of the things that you may want will likely be standards in their practice.  IMO it is never to early to ask questions to get an idea about their policies on certain things.  This is your birth so do not feel shy or awkward about asking questions.   I used an OB for my delivery and it was a large practice (8 OBs and you get who is on call when you go into labor).  I started asking questions right away to get an idea for the polices associated with their practice. I always brought a list of questions with me at each appointment so that I would remember what I wanted to discuss.  The OB answered them honestly and talked about the practice policies as a whole.  Based on this I got an idea of how the OBs operated and what they allowed for.  I ended up delivering with an OB from the practice that I had never met. He was excellent and respected every one of my wishes (no continuous fetal monitoring, no Heplock, delayed chord clamping etc).  We had a wonderful birth and it was an amazing experience.  I felt very comfortable going into L&D with the practice because I knew how they felt about certain things.
  • BrideHilda: I'm very much a shy introvert.
Thanks ladies i feel more confident about approaching this now. My a/s is feb 4th do I will bring it up then.
