Second Trimester with 14 month old, carrying question?

My DS walks, but not for long distances, so I still end up carrying him quite a bit. He probably weighs about 23 or 24lbs. Was there a point in your second pregnancy, when you weren't able to carry your first? I need to check with my doc, but I think I am in denial! Thanks!

  • I carried DD1 until the end.  My weight limit, given by my OB, was 25lbs.  DD1 was about 20-22lbs when I was pg with DD2.

  • I also carried DS the entire time. I encouraged him to walk when he could but still had to carry/lift him sometimes. He is 25-26 lbs.

  • I carried my DD until the day I had my DS. My DD was only 20lbs at 13.5 months when DS was born but I would have carried her even if she was heavier.
  • I still carry DS; he's 16 months and 20lbs. My Dr hasn't said anything, and as long as i'm not in any discomfort from it I will continue to do it until i'm told otherwise :)

  • I carried DD until the end. I tried to let her walk sometimes, but she didn't start walking until late Oct and then with the snow (or more often cold weather/dawdling combo best perfected by toddlers), I carried her around. I think she was between 24-27# at 16 months.

  • DS weighs 20 lbs and I am 34 weeksish. He doesn't walk yet, so I have no choice. It hasn't been an issue though.

  • DD is about 22lbs and I pick her up quite a bit at home, but fortunately she likes to be independent & walk on her own a lot too.  It also is probably a good lesson to prepare him for when the new baby is here and you won't be able to always just pick him up when wanted.  Be sure you lift him up carefully using your legs (not your back) so you don't strain anything, but shouldn't be a problem.  I'm more surprised that I'm able to hold her comfortably with my belly in the way.

  • There was no time in my second pregnancy that I didn't pick up and carry DS1 (who was 18 months when DS2 was born).
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Thanks all! Good to know! I think you all are a lot tougher than me! I already feel like he is getting uncomfortable to carry, I guess I will see how it goes. I do like the idea of practicing for when baby comes.

  • I'm still carrying my 23 pounder and I expect to until DS2 gets here.

I'm not positive so don't quote me on it, but I swear I heard/read somewhere that as long as it's a weight you are used to carrying, like your child (as long as they aren't crazy heavy), it's okay to do so while pregnant.  I think it's when you strain and you aren't used to it that's dangerous.

  • I carried DD1 and lifted her into/out of the carseat, high chair, and crib all the way through my 2nd pregnancy. It's not like I had much of a choice since I SAH and DH works long hours. I did what I had to do.

  • DS weighs 35 lbs. I still lift him but I don't carry him long distances. I had to stop picking him up for a while around 34 weeks because of some bleeding issues.

I believe this is true. My 16month old is 30 lbs, but I still carry him. What else would I do? Get out the stroller in every parking lot? Anyway, I'll carry my 4yo up the stairs to his bed if I'm feeling up to it. He wants a snuggle and I'm not going to turn him down. I'm a softie ;)

  • Still carrying my boy when I need to - no change really and he?s 35lbs.

I?ll be 37weeks tomorrow and Ive had a very normal, healthy pregnancy so far.

Like a PP said, it?s what I?m used to. I don?t think any Dr wld recommend anyone pg to suddenly start lifting such a weight though.
