Peanut butter

Do you give your LO pb? At 12 months pedi said he could have anything but pb and shellfish until 2. DH took him to his 15 month appt and he said the pedi...a different one...said he could have anything.

Re: Peanut butter

  • That's 'cause your first pedi is outdated in his info.  A lot of them are still recommending to wait, but the new research says that unless your child has a risk factor (other allergies, family history of allergies, or excema) there's no need to risk.  Some studies suggest that waiting too long can actually increase the risk of allergies.

Lily's had pb since about 7 months.

I asked this question a week or so ago and go to this same response, I don't know if was from you, but it prompted me to ask my pedi at his 15 month and she was well aware of the AAP recommendations, she just had her own, which she was happy to share with me.

Their recommendation, across the board, no matter if you have allergies in your family or not, is to wait until 2 but preferably 3.  Their reason is the gut isn't properly formed until 3 (scientific proof) and there is no hard evidence to suggest it is impossible to get a delayed allergic reaction, from giving it too early.

That said, she talked about my own p.b. use and decided he's had it through my breast milk enough to not hold off.  If he was going to show an allergy, he would have and if he will get one, later, he will, no matter if we hold off or not, because I eat it one a day and he's been exposed to it through me for the last 15 months.

He ate a pb sandwich for lunch today and loved every second of it.  I rubbed it on his cheek before hand to make sure he didn't develop a rash.

  • I just gave it to Izzy last week and she doesn't like it. I plan on keep trying. She didn't have any reactions.

  • I ask all this as well because DS had the edge of my pb and j sandwich today and has hives and blotches all over his body. Pretty severe when he woke up after a 1.5 hr nap. DH have him Benadryl and then he threw up. I got home a half hour later and now we are headed to the ER per the dr on calls recommendation. No breathing problems so far.

No history of any food allergies in either of our families.

  • Creedon, I'm sorry your little guy is having a lousy reaction.  Hope he feels better soon.  Sucks that it sounds like he is having an allergic reaction, but do not feel guilty that he ate the pb.  As smit said in one of the other recent pb posts, if he was going to have an allergic reaction it was going to show up whenever he had the pb.  At least you and your H know what he ate and are getting him seen to.

jeann, that's great that your dr shared their reasoning with you.  Most seem to just be sticking with the old approach because that's what they know.  The fact is that they basically have no clue about allergies.  There are all kinds of theories, none of which have been proven, and they really don't know what to tell parents about how to decrease the chances and they don't know why there are so many more allergies now than there used to be (seemingly).  Personally, I don't put much stock in the theory that delaying decrease OR increases the risk of allergies.  I'm more inclined to think it's related to all the chemicals and crap we're constantly ingesting in our food.  My SIL also shared an interesting theory that some of it is related to overdoing it on certain foods while you're young.  But essentially right now it's anybody's guess and it's luck of the draw whether you/your kid has an allergy.

  • I read that peanut butter can be a choking hazard because its hard to get it come up if needed but I don't remember where I heard this.

Probably on here.  I think JG has mentioned it before.  Which is why we spread it thin, not put giant globs or feed it to her by the spoonful.

  • The "outdated" thing is untrue. There are also studies that show continued exposure develops the allergy just as there are studies now showing continued, constant and increasing exposure can temporarily cure the allergy as long as they are exposed all the time. If the parents have any allergies, especially food allergies the children can have any allergy. For instance MH is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts as well as other things so some foods I have rubbed on Los skin a few times before feeding her things that cause anaphylaxis in a hope she would have a slight skin reaction vs risking her throat closing. That doesn't mean 5 years from now she won't be allergic to shrimp because she isn't now and neither of us are. No one else in MHs family has any type of food allergy. PB can also be a choking hazard even if its not thick because the other food they are eating with it can stick to it. At this point most of our kids are closing in on 1 1/2. Having to deal with an adult going through anaphylaxis I would wait the extra few months. I wouldn't judge anyone else who gives their kid PB but I couldn't live with myself and I would have anxiety forever about it if something happened.
  • The little guy is doing well. He was given prednisone and Benadryl and thankfully no breathing issues. They said the rash could last a few days but should lessen soon. They're going to send us home with some epi pens.

  • At our 12 month appointment, our pedi said she could have anything we could chew.  That's what we've been doing, but we haven't had any adverse reactions.

I'm so glad he is ok physically and you are ok emotionally!  This was my biggest fear!  Our ped said to wait until 2 for pb and shellfish but she accidentally got some pb on her face/lips when my dh was eating some (idk how this happened lol) and she was fine so we tried it and no reactions so far...but allergies terrify me!

  • Just so y'all know (because this is in line with my mom's specialty of pediatric asthma) they do know quite a bit about food allergies.  Here's the big problem. Food allergies are on the rise.  With the advent of all these vaccines, children are becoming more immune to typical diseases.  As a result, the bodies are becoming more prone to allergies and asthma. An unfortunate trade off.  So the respiratory/histamine system seems to be more compromised as the Immune system becomes stronger. Allergies and asthma are at an all time high for our current population compared with any population/generation in the past.

So the allergy information out there is both current and outdated. If that makes sense. In general, there is no benefit to withholding any allergenic food, they no longer believe (like they once did) that early introduction would cause an allergy to develop. However, there is now a far greater chance that our children will have allergic reactions regardless of family history and if you are more comfortable waiting until your child can communicate or is easier to treat due to age, then that's a viable option too.  But as is often pointed out, allergies can develop at any time. Both my mom and I had late onset food allergies- we were both in our teens. (me- mussels, her-mangoes)
