Babies: 6 - 9 Months

8 month old no longer STTN

For the last two weeks my 8 month old has been waking up anywhere from 1-4 times per night.  At first I thought it was teething related and that he wanted his pacifier back so he could chew on it.  Then one night when my husband went to check on him during one of these episodes he was up on all fours rocking back and forth in his sleep sack like he does when he is trying to crawl, which he isn't quite able to do, sleep sack or no sleep sack.  So I figured he was waking up trying to crawl in his crib and getting pissed.  Now, I have no idea what the answer is.  He always goes back to sleep when we put the pacifier back in his mouth or if we let him CIO but I hate that we went from having a perfect sleeper to this.  I know that parents who's babies are not STTN will hate me for this post but is anyone else going through the same thing?  Any suggestions on getting my perfect sleeper back?

Re: 8 month old no longer STTN

  • Well, we've never been so lucky to STTN (well, not since the 4 month wakeful, anyway) but I'm convinced this is developmental.   My LO does the same thing.  Wakes up and rocks on all 4's (isn't crawling yet).  Sometimes sounds like she's in pain, which I attritbute to teething, and last night she had a terrible bout of gas she just couldn't get out until I put her in a sitting position in my lap.  Her poor tummy was rock hard.  Add to that what I think is some pretty hardcore separation anxiety at night, and we have rough nights that end up with us bedsharing just to get some zzz's.

I'm sure she'll outgrow it.  I'm going to get the no cry sleep solution for some insight and ideas, but am not quite at the sleep training place yet.  I think once her teeth pop through we'll have a reprieve.  Temporary, maybe, but some relief, anyway.

  • Yep.  It's common at this stage because they have so much going on developmentally, that they just can't keep their brains quiet enough to let them sleep!  DD has been super restless that last couple of weeks and starting waking up in the MOTN again, which she hasn't done for several months.  It's frustrating, but I keep reminding myself that it will pass.  Eventually.  I hope.  LOL

  • DS hasn't STTN since he started even having an inkling of crawling. We got a couple good nights after he mastered crawling, but now he's pulling up and side shuffling so we're back to 2 or 3 wakeups. I've just come to terms with the fact that he probably won't STTN again until he's walking. Hopefully since he was an early crawler and now standing and side shuffling, he'll be an early walker, too. His sleep has always suffered when he's working on physical things, so it is what it is. He'll STTN again when he's ready.

  • We are in the same boat.  He was sleeping about 10 hours total and now is waking up more often.  This happens before they master a new skill (right now he is rocking on all fours).  Mine also has a cold (all the time thanks to daycare) so we are just riding it out.  Someone told me about Wonder Weeks (google it) and DS is right at the week of most fussiness.

They will grow out of it eventually.  Good luck!

  • Last night DD woke up at 11 and was sitting up in her crib. This is new for her. She didnt make a peep but sat up awake for atleast an hour and a half. Needless to say I think when they hit developmental milestones you are in for some bumpy sleep habits as my DD STTN too normally. I'm afraid to see what happens tonight as today she started doing the rocking thing like she might start to crawl soon.

  • We added more food to DD's diet. She wanted to nurse ALL night long, but we up'ed her solids at lunch and dinner and we are back to sleeping. PTL!

  • My LO's doing the same thing. She was a great sleeper, but now she's staying up late until 10 or 11pm and then getting up around 4am and refusing to go back to sleep. I'll be glad when this latest bedtime phase ends because the lack of sleep is wearing me down quick. Four hours a night is just not enough.

It does sound like a lot of us are going through the same sleep regression. Hopefully it'll pass soon.
