Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Standing in the crib

My lo is not a fan of sleep. She fights it like its her job. She just started to be able to pull up and now keeps popping up. Should i just let her stand or should I go in and try to put her back down? She spent an hour standing and chewing her crib before I gave up on nap time this afternoon. I want her to learn to get herself to sleep but I also want her to be well rested. If I rock her with a bottle she will usually fall asleep but I know that is not the best idea.

Re: Standing in the crib

  • I think whatever works for you. My dd is 10 months and does the same thing. She almost rarely goes back down and goes to sleep so I go in there and rock her till she's asleep or rub her back and leave. And it works for me. Hey maybe I'll end up paying for that in the future like people say. But it works. I would try that. Are you certain she's tired when she goes for a nap? Maybe wait a bit longer

  • When DS2 learned to pull himself up in the crib, it took about 4-5 days for him to figure out how to get himself back down.  If he was really struggling (crying while standing) then I would go in and lay him back down with his blanket and paci then leave.  I repeated that as many times as I needed to but eventually (usually after about 30 minutes) he would fall asleep.  After 4-5 days, he learned how to get himself back down and would play for a bit, then lay down and go to sleep.
  • I agree with PP that maybe she isn't ready for her nap at that time. At this stage of the game, I feel like they are constantly changing their schedule, and when nap time used to be/how many naps they want to take. I think it's also a bit of a novelty and will probably wear off in time. Hopefully.

  • My LO has been doing the same thing. I am not a fan of CIO but I let him cry for a few mins while I watch him on the monitor then I go in and comfort him and usually end up nursing him to sleep.  It's not the best practice but it works to get him down for a nap. Eventually I would like to put him in the crib and let him call asleep when he is tired. One day...I guess that will happen.

  • My DS is standing and sitting as well, he knows how to get himself down he just doesn't want to.  Fights naps like crazy, after letting him cry for 20 minutes I go get him, he either falls asleep on me or he is ready to play again.  We have pedi appt on Wednesday and I am going to ask their suggestion.  I don't mind CIO for a little but I can't listen for an hour, I know it probably isn't great but I will go nuts if I listen that long.  Whining I can deal with, full out screams kill me.

  • I'm the saw way. We tried sleep easy but the check ins made it worse and she would go hours crying. I though it would get better but after a full week she still just cried and cried. I tried not doing check ins also, it still did not work. I try to let her go for a little while but end up going and getting her. Let me know if you pedi had any suggestions. Mine was not much help
