December 2012 Moms

LO hasn't had a Bowel movement since Monday.

Monday was the last time he pooped. It has been nothing but pee until yesterday when he had diarrhea. It was nothing but liquid. Like he peed from his butt basically. And now were back to nothing. What should I do? And why is this happening? I have tried pedialyte, suppository, taking his temp, and a q tip

Re: LO hasn't had a Bowel movement since Monday.

  • my pedi told me to mix 1 tsp of dark caro syrup in his formula because the sugar will act like a laxitive in lo's. He told me to only do this if he hasn't had a bm in 48 hours. Hope it helps. :)

  • Um, that isn't a lot of info to go on. How old is your LO? And do you BF or FF?

DS "goes" once a week or so, unless we supplement formula at some point during the week. It's normal for a BF baby to go way less than a FF baby, which is why I asked.

This. My DD is bf'd and still poops once a day but it is more of a liquid. As long as your LO doesn't seem uncomfortable or is straining when trying to go then I would give it a few days. If your LO is bf'd its not uncommon for them to go a few days without pooping because breastmilk is easier to digest than formula. If you are ff'ing and constipation is an ongoing problem you may consider switching to a different formula, I had to try a few with DS before we figured out what worked for him.

  • DD is EBF and only goes once ever 2 to 3 days. Pedi says this is fine and others have told me that BF babies could go only once every 10 days! I wouldn't do anything g to LO without checking with a doctor first. Doc may say to wait it out a few more days and see if everything regulates. As long as LO is still eating and peeing and doesn't seem to be in any distress I wouldn't freak out just yet.

  • I am just shocked at this post-- my LO goes like 4 times a day.  I thought that was what they all do...?

Your LO is 3 weeks old?  That's normal.  The switch occurs around 6 weeks (was 5 in our case).  My LO went from pooping almost every diaper to once every 3 days.  So you may see a switch from 4/day to once a week, potentially.

OR, you might have one like my first son who continues to poop once or twice every day...forever.
