Bengali name pronunciation

Hello all,

This is not a name anyone will have on their top 1000 list but it is my husband's nickname in Bengali (Bangla, the language spoken in Bangladesh where his family is from).

The name we are considering is Shaon. It is a word to describe the mood people feel during monsoon season, which is a kind of romantic time that lasts for months.

It's also what everyone calls my husband in Bangladesh.

First, I'm wondering how you would pronounce it. (I know how I would ;)

Second, which middle names do you like?

Lee, David, Joseph? (All family names from my side)

If you'd prefer I'd post this somewhere else, then just ignore the message. I'd prefer to have the opinion of a more familiar crowd ;)

Just looking at it, I would pronounce it Shah-oon, but without a sylliblic break. Similar to the standard pronunciation of the word 'round'.

To go with it, I like David.

Out of curiosity, how is is pronounced in Bengali?

Very close if not spot on. The pronunciation is Sh-AHo-wn. Very much like round, just as you were saying, Petra, and just one syllable. There is an emphasis of the AH-o in the middle that stretches out the syllable a bit.

Another way to describe it would be to say it has a strong "oww" like the abbreviation of ouch in the middle. Or Sh-OWW-n.

David is my dad's name so that would work pretty well.

I guess it will be like Keanu Reeves in the 80s when people were calling him KEE-nu instead of KEE-ah-nu ;)

My guess would be like 'Shane' but I've never seen it before.

I like Joseph as a MN, but I'm biased because that's DH. :-) With how I'm pronouncing Shaon, it flows too much into Lee for me to like how that sounds.

Thanks, I like Joseph because he is the ancestor that came over from Russia in the early 1900s.

  • Your description is making me think of Monsoon Wedding! :)

I would probably say Shaw-own, or Shay-own. David or Joseph both sound good to me. I think the one-syllable of Lee doesn't work so well.

We were there during the beginning of monsoon season this year. Very similar to the movie ;)

  • I'm not going to read the other responses before I respond because I don't want to be swayed... But I would pronounce it Sh A on (hard A).

If that's how it's pronounced I would go with Shaon Lee.

WOO HOO! Chalk one up to watching a ton of Bengali movies!

On an aside, Monsoon Wedding is the movie that got me interested in the genre, and now I am an avid fan!

That's awesome that you watch Bengali movies. I have had to watch a bunch of Bengali soap operas with my MIL and GIL and AILs. The whole plot is the matriarch of the family is yelling about something and the whole family is gathered around her listening with rapt attention (including all the men). The camera pans to people's expressions with a cheesy "flash" like sound effect as she's talking and she threatens to "immolate" herself a bunch of times. lol.

  • At first I thought Sha'on. then realised it sounds a lot like Shawn.

As a middle name I like Joseph.
