I am thinking if delivering at Rush because I live less than a mile from it. Cesarean rates are high there, but is that because high risk pregnancies go there? Any recommendations or gripes?
As a doula I have worked there a few times and I personally wouldnt recommend it to anyone. The labor and delivery rooms are small/old, it is filled with students and they have one of the highest c/s rates with no real explanation. UIC is right around the corner and has nice rooms and the c/s rate is half that of Rush. The midwives there are great.
I've heard the high c/s rate is due to referrals for high risk pregnancies. Rush has a Level 3 Nicu so that adds up as to why so many high risk would go there. Their new hospital has completed construction and the new maternity ward opens in June. Do you think that could make it better?
No I don't think so. Yes they did drop below 40% in 2011, but still they are 38%. UIC next door has a c-section rate under 20% and they are also a level III NICU. Northwestern is a level III as well and under 30%.
Re: Rec for delivering at Rush?
I haven't been able to find more recent years, but looks like St. Joes is one of the lowest. I heard this data is public so keep searching! Good luck.
