sucking

Ok so Milla wants to suck for comfort, she will either use me or find her hand, when we are really lucky she actually gets her thumb in there. Well she will suck on me to the point of over feeding and then she either spits up, projectile vomits every where, or gags a ton until she projectile vomits. She seems to have a major gag reflex because when we try a paci she gags, once that also resulted in projectile vomiting. I bough three different pacis and she does that with all of them. She seems to accept and suck right away then within about 30 seconds starts gagging. DS was a paci lover from the beginning and we never had an issue. Any suggestions?

Re: sucking

  • Which paci's have you tried? Maybe a preemie one would be small enough to not make her gag? We tried the playtex binky and it's pretty small, if you haven't given that one a shot already.

  • I'm not super familair with it, but does this maybe meet some symptoms of silent reflux? My DD projectile vomits sometimes because I have an overactive letdown so she gets milk way too fast when she first starts eating, but I guess that is not your issue if a paci can cause it!

  • My little guy comfort feeds and has eaten too much and spit up similar. I try calming him down any other way before resorting to letting him comfort feed. Some things I've tried besides the obvious rocking chair and singing or a binky is washing my hands and.letting him suck on my finger or before I give up and just let him use my breast as a pacifier I try skin to skin contact and try to talk to him. It sometimes works sometimes doesn't. Hope it helps.
  • I know it's not generally recommended and you may want to check with your doc first, but maybe try 1oz of water in her bottle.  Don't do it often, but maybe once in while to soothe her.

Skye doesn't have the same problem with the binki, but if she doesn't want it she spits it , but, if I b.feed her she just falls asleep until I move her and then she's awake and crying again.

  • I would also ask your doc about pyloric stenosis. I have a friend who's baby is 5 days older than my Mila and she's being tested for that because of the same symptoms.

  • This sounds similar to my LO. I found that it helped to only offer one breast at feeding and she does not feed that long because I think I have a fast flow. She still spits up but I try to burp often (like every 2 minutes). The only paci she will take is a soother that does not make her gag. she refuses the other 3 I have tried or gags. She also does not take them often. It does help to swaddle and shush her and try to get her calmed down in other ways then comfort feeding because otherwise she will over eat too.
