Cloth Diapering

Newborn CD rental

I've just begun researching CD for our first LO.  I've seen a few newborn rental programs that seem like a really good deal.  The ones I'm most interested in are fitteds/covers, like the one from Itsy Bitsy Bums, since from what I've read some of the AIOs for newborns either don't fit well or have limited absorbancy.  I'm not really interested in using prefolds for now, as I'm trying to convince DH and his family that CD really is easy and not like the old fashioned diapers they picture.

Do you think these programs are a good idea for a first timer?  We do hope to have more than just one LO, but it seems like if I save money on NB diapers and can use that savings to stock up on AIO and pocket diapers for once we're out of the NB phase, and just rent again with the next baby.

Re: Newborn CD rental

  • I personally would just buy a newborn stash. If the only reason you want fitteds is to convince your H and family, you can always use fitteds for when your H or anyone else changes a diaper, and buy some prefolds for your own use to cut down on costs. If you are planning on having more than one baby, you can use the same diapers, and newborn diapers have a great resale value. Besides, your H may be surprised and end up liking prefolds the best.

Plus, you can always start out your OS stash with a smaller stash while you figure out which diapers work best for you and buy just a few here and there over time to complete it once you know which are your favorite. That way the newborn diapers won't really take away from you having a good sized and compete OS stash.

  • This is my first time CDing a newborn, so take it for what it's worth....

I did sign up for the Itsy Bitsy Bums newborn rental. I'll also buy a dozen or so infant prefolds and some extra covers. I think if I *knew* we'd be able to have another baby, I might feel differently. But dd was relatively big when she was born 8lb 3oz, and was 11lbs by her 2 month check up, so I'm only expecting to use the NB fitteds for about 8-10 weeks. It's just not worth it to me to purchase those, use them for 2 months, then have to worry about reselling them. I'd rather rent.

But, like I said. If I was pretty certain we'd be able to get pg again soon (it's almost 7 yrs between kids the way it is, and I'm 36) and could use the NBs for a second baby, it might be worth buying a stash.

  • I have a newborn who I've been cloth diapering for a month. He's my first and we want one or two more, so I definitely bought newborn diapers instead of doing a rental. I have loved the AIOs and had no problem with absorbency. I have especially loved Swaddlebees Newborns and Thirsties Size 1s, which will fit your baby from 6-16+ lbs. That will probably get us through 6-9 months I'd expect. One size AIOs absolutely didn't fit DS. Even if they have a low weight range, newborns keep their legs up close to their body and only a newborn dipe really considers this and builds a diaper for it.

  • Thanks!  I think I'll start building a stash of newborn AIOs and fitteds. I love all the brand suggestions on this board.  I actually picked up a Swaddlebees newborn and Thirsties on sale the other day so I'll have to show the in-laws how adorable and easy they look.

Just as an FYI your son will probably outgrow the absorbency on that diaper before he hits 16 pounds. They will not last until 6-9 months without leaks. Most babies outgrow the absorbency between 4-10 weeks (adjusted age, anyways).
