I think ACOG is way, way behind the curve on this one. I did read that statement when it came out and was very disappointed in their lack of support for delayed cord clamping. Studies have been unable to establish any link whatsoever between DCC and polycythemia, and there was recently a very good article in the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing about the benefits of DCC (abstract here: https://journals.lww.com/jpnnjournal/Abstract/2012/07000/Rethinking_Placental_Transfusion_and_Cord_Clamping.6.aspx). I did read the full article online somewhere for free but can't get it to come up right now.
I fired my OB and switched to a CNM because my OB refused to do delayed cord clamping. DCC is standard practice among midwives.
Those are both great links to read. We delayed last time, and will again this time. My family doctor was happy to abide by my wishes on this, although I don't think it's her routine practise.
Re: Not sure if this has been shared here yet: RE delayed cord clamping
