Minnesota Babies

Mercy hospital, Cambridge, or maple grove?

Has anyone delivered at any of these three hospitals? Can you share your experience? I currently work within Allina and frankly DO NOT trust them (If you've watched the news, 2008 they burnt a 12 day old and then last month they gave the wrong baby to the wrong mother to breast feed)...I've already switched NP's as my first one didn't follow up with lab results and let an infection get 10x worse and Mercy doesn't seem to have the best reputation for labor and delivery...I've switched to Cambridge but haven't met my new midwife but seeing how it's also an allina hospital I'm a bit weary... On the other hand, I've heard amazing things about Maple grove but I have also been told even if you plan a birth with them if they happen to be full at that time they will ship you off to Robinsdale. So I'm desperately looking for advice :)

Re: Mercy hospital, Cambridge, or maple grove?

  • I delivered my first child at Mercy and had a wonderful experience! The staff was amazing. I had a few friends deliver there too and they all had great experiences. I have a few friends who have recently delivered at Maple Grove too and they had great experiences.

  • I delivered at maple grove and had a great experience. All the nurses were wonderful and. Took great care of me and my baby. I spent 5days there due to having a csection and lo had jaundice. Being a first time mom the nurses let me do what I was comfortable with alone but also showed me how to do things I wasn't comfortable with.

  • I delivered all three of my kids at Cambridge Medical Center with the midwives. I can not say enough wonderful things about Susan and Rhonda. I've had Rhonda deliver 2 of my children and Susan one. You start out with one as your "main provider" and then around the end of the second trimester you alternate appointments with both of them so you get to know them well. They are really good about returning phone calls and also fitting you in to be seen. I hope that helps!
  • I know that Allina doesn't have the greatest reputation from these few stories but I have known several people that have delivered at Abbott and have had a great experience.

I delivered at Maple Grove Hospital and thought it was great.  The rooms are comfortable (and huge), staff was great, easy for visitors, etc...  My one and only complaint was that I didn't like the lactation consultant that I had.  She was rushed and seemed pretty judgmental at times.  I am lucky to know other people that could answer the questions I had because she was not a good resource.  The nurses were great though...  they sent a card a few weeks after and remembered specific stories about our stay there which I thought was nice and thoughtful.

Also, when we took our class at the hospital someone asked the instructor about getting sent to Robbinsdale if it was full....she said that is not true. The night I delivered they said earlier in the week they had something like 22 moms one night. From what I understand, they would send you to Robbinsdale if a higher level NICU was needed.  Good luck!

  • I delivered at MG and loved it! If they are full you get sent to wherever your dr has rights to deliver at so you would need to ask your dr. But keep in mind that they just expanded their LD in may and more construction was going in in July when I was in there! so they can accommodate a lot more people now!

Its not that they want to turn you away but if they don't have a room and nursing staff you wouldn't want to be there anyway! My dr said its very unlikely but she wanted to warn me so I'd know what to expect!

I'd still pick MG...the nurses there were awesome and the rooms are nice!

  • I deliveried at Maple grove everything was almost great. The only complaint I have which someone else brought up was the lactation consultant. She was really pushy and not very incouraging.

I feel Mercy is right up their with Unity stay as far away as possible. My doctor actually told me to choose between M.G, Mercy, Unity. But if it was up to her she would stay away from Mercy and Unity.

  • I am 17 weeks today & plan on delivering at MG! I've also heard to stay away from Unity & Mercy.... each hospital has the good & bad!! I just hope & pray for a good experience no matter where we deliver :-) Good luck with your decision!

  • I had an emergency surgery back in 2009 and it was a HORRIBLE experience!  It wasn't labor and delivery related but if I can, I will not go back there again.

I had my daughter at Southdale because my water broke at 33 weeks and couldn't deliver at MG.  It was ok.  They had a great NICU but the rooms were outdated (I think they've upgraded since).

I had my son at MG and LOVED it.  It was such a quiet hospital and everyone was great.  Rooms were nice and cozy.  One thing I will tell you - this worked for me - not sure if it will work for you - but if you go to MG when you get your bill call and ask them if you pay in full if you'll get a discount.  I got 25% off mine and my son's bills (our out of pocket cost)!

  • I had my son at North Memorial in 2009 and was really happy with them. When I had my daughter in 2012 I delivered (by planned & medically necessary C-section) at Maple Grove. From the moment I arrived and was being prepped (vitals and such) the nurses were amazing and remained that way through my entire stay. I had a much harder time after this C-section than my first and they did everything they could within their power to help and make me more comfortable. They were sympathetic and understanding. Another big thing for us was that they were helpful IF WE NEEDED IT. They did not push or get in the way. They were respectful to leave us be (which was what we preferred), but would still make sure to check in to see if we did need anything while being attentive when we did. I did find that the lactation consultant was very pushy. I didn't need any help in that area and it seemed as though she didn't want to take no for an answer. She was overly persistent and sort of.. mildly rude. I understand she has a lot of information and experience and I respect that, but I also knew what I was doing and was comfortable doing so.. but she seemed to try to make me feel as though I didn't and couldn't do it on my own.

In 2009 at least, and they may have updated since then, but North Memorial did not have a mother-child security system, but Maple Grove did. Mom, Dad (or whoever might be staying), & baby all have bracelet bands that react to one another so that it's verified as your baby, an alarm goes off if the baby gets too far away from you, and if someone does get out a certain area in the ward with a baby (even their own), an alarm sounds and if I recall it sort of goes into brief lock down until it's figured out what is going on. This did also happen accidentally when people would travel a bit too far while just being out for a walk with their baby, though.

The room was very nice, the food was pretty good, and all around we just received really great care. I would highly recommend them.
