pulling away at the breast?

mobile:  pulling away at the breast?

DS will be 3 months next week and lately {past couple of weeks or so} he constantly pulls away from the breast then latches, pulls away, then latches.  it starts at about 5 minutes into feeding and it's been so frustrating.  sometimes he gets pissed and sometimes he just lies there, coos at me then smiles.

once he starts doing this, i will try to burp him but that's not usually the problem.  do you think it could be a supply issue?  something else?  since it starts at only 5 minutes into each session, i find it hard to believe he is satisfied already.  just two weeks ago it would still take 15-20 minutes each side to nurse him.  we are still on a 2.5-3 hour cycle each day so he isn't want to constantly eat either.

has your LO done this and is it just a phase or is there another problem i should be concerned with?

  • DD does the same thing, I'm interested to see what responses you get. Sorry I'm no help, but you're not alone.

  • I've been wondering this too.  I thought I read that babies will start to get distracted at the breast.  I was thinking about getting a nursing necklace - has anyone every tried that?

  • I brought this up at her 2 month because she will pull away and sometimes cry. The pedi said she has a slight case of acid reflux. If she kept doing to give her a dose of gripe water [because that's what has been working for her] and try again. So far its worked.

  • My son does the same thing.  I just stop feeding him and try from the same side a little later.  He would just rather look up and smile at me than eat.  If I keep messing around, milk has squirted everywhere and the couch is a disaster, so I just stop.

Cooper does it when the flow isn't that great. He does it to my underproducer all the time. I usually just switch sides then. Sometimes it's because he's distracted. I usually do a butt pat when that happens to get him to focus.

This. I try and latch him on twice and then move to the other side. He also seems to get distracted really easily.

  • I'm glad to read this. It makes perfect sense and yet I didn't even think that would be the problem. It does happen occasionally on my underperforming side.

  • My son has been doing it as we'll. I notice its when he's trying to poop though.
